Description

The 2023 release of Hemelrand marks one of the most fascinating chapters in this vineyard’s history. Chris and Suzaan Alheit encountered a touch of botrytis in the Chenin Blanc just before harvest and made the bold decision to leave it in the blend. Rather than making a sweet wine, they fermented it to bone-dry, resulting in a "Vine Garden" with a level of exotic complexity we haven't seen from this site before.

The technical specs remain consistent with the Alheit ethos—natural fermentation in seasoned barrels and concrete—but the character of the 2023 is entirely its own. The "noble rot" hasn't added sugar, but it has contributed a distinct honeyed weight and a savory, waxy texture that balances the naturally high acidity of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge.

This is a deep, evocative white. It smells of peach, apricot, and dried flowers, while the palate offers a slightly more viscous, oily feel than previous years. A twist of bitter lemon on the finish keeps it perfectly upright and fresh. It is a brilliant, singular wine from two of South Africa’s most respected producers, and given the tiny yields of 2023, it is an exceptionally rare find.

"Dense fruit and driving acidity before a deeply savoury finish. A compelling rendition of this wine"
- Christian Eedes (Wine Magazine))

94 points - "36% Chardonnay, 28% Roussanne, 18% Chenin Blanc, 17% Verdelho, 1% Muscat – the Chenin in particular developing significant but entirely pleasing noble rot. Fermented and matured for 12 months in older oak. Citrus, stone fruit and pineapple to go with notes of potpourri, honey and mushroom on the nose. Dense fruit and driving acidity before a deeply savoury finish. A compelling rendition of this wine." - Christian Eedes (Wine Magazine)

Hemelrand Vine Garden is a unique vineyard that produces a unique wine. The idea is to bottle the wine just as the vineyard produces it, effectively creating a white field blend that changes every year depending on the vintage conditions. This way we have one place expressed by a few different grapes, changing as the season dictates. Hemelrand continues to fulfil its promise of excellence, showing increased depth and nuance year- on-year as the vines mature.

Hemelrand it is situated on the cold and windy Hemel & Aarde Ridge at 360 meters above sea level on gravelly clay and Sandstone. The vineyard was planted in 2010 to Chardonnay, Roussanne, Verdelho, Chenin blanc, and Muscat Blanc a petit grain. However, as mentioned, the proportions of the different grapes produced significantly varies each vintage. Viticulturally speaking, this is a marginal site, the upside of which is slow ripening with high natural acidity.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
