Description

This is Valli’s home block – the vineyard that put them on the map. Gibbston is one of Central Otago’s coolest spots, and it shows in the style: lighter colour, lifted aromatics and a finer, more detailed structure than the warmer subregions.

The 2022 season ran long and steady, giving the fruit plenty of hang time without pushing ripeness. Everything was hand-picked, fermented with wild yeast and aged in French oak that sits quietly in the background.

The wine is bright and open, with red cherry, raspberry and a little dried herb. It’s supple through the middle, finishing clean and firm with that typical Gibbston acidity that keeps it all in line. It’s a calm, confident release from one of the region’s most consistent producers.

The red cherries, plums and mushrooms come through clearly on the nose. Medium-bodied with creamy tannins that are nicely chewy and juicy at the end. There’s softness with tension here. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Schisty and wonderfully perfumed with a core of red and dark cherry fruits underscored with hints of thyme, mountain herbs, exotic spice, wild strawberry, vanilla, amaro, softly-spoken oak and distant smoked, dried meats. The canvas of fruit is stretched taut over a minerally Gibbston framework here, the leitmotif of tension and release, its travel long and true with a fine tannin architecture and an extended, spicy finish.

The 2022 Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir speaks of cocoa and bramble, woodsy spice and purple fruit. This has all the concentration and distinction of a Chinese goji berry, with black cherry, aniseed, licorice and crushed rocks. Central Otago is a beautiful, stark place of mountains and vista, and this wine echoes that. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

The Real Review 95 Points

Taut, elegant pinot noir with a mix of dark cherry, floral/rose petal/violet, savoury/baked earth and spicy oak flavours. From a top Gibbston vineyard. A wine with energy and age-ability.

“Bright garnet hue with savoury/spice aromas of wild thyme, rosemary, fennel and mushroom complemented by dark cherry, ripe strawberry and dried rose petals. The elegantly structured palate is layered and compact with a purposeful flow, much like an alpine river in springtime. This exceptional vintage has the fine tannins and exquisite perfume that are the hallmarks of Gibbston Pinot Noir. Concentrated and delicious at release, this wine will continue to provide enjoyment for 20+/- years.” Jen Parr - January 2025
