Description

A fantastic example of Syrah here from the Swinney family and the dynamic winemaking / grape-growing duo of Rob Mann and Rhys Thomas.

While Western Australian Cabernet Sauvignon gets the lion's share of attention, Shiraz when grown in the right spot can excel, particularly when grown and tended by someone as knowledgeable as Rhys Thomas.

This is a brilliant Syrah. It's spicy, intense and powerful, ready to drink now or in a decade's time. Rob Mann has brought a wealth of experience to the Swinney operation since coming on as winemaker in 2018 and every ounce of his skill is on show here.

"You sense vineyard here with a deft touch of the winemaker simply coaxing a little more out of it."
- Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

95 points
"This is a really wonderful wine here, with the classic Frankland River splay of ferruginous tannin, rust and blood. It's super."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

94 points
"Another wine to bury in the cellar for eight years or more, although drinkable now with a brisk decant."
- Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com)

Tasting Notes

Inky crimson purple colour. Dark spice and brooding intensity with mulberry, Chinese five spice, and squid ink. Medium to full-bodied with saturated blueberry, satsuma plum, and black pepper. Incredibly youthful and expressive with layers of flavour and texture underpinned by a fleshy mouthcoating tannin structure carrying the fruit and spice into an enduring finish.

Vineyard Notes

Dry-grown, vertically trellised Syrah with small parcels of fruit hand-picked from specific sites on our Swinney Wilson’s Pool & Powderbark vineyards. The incorporation of mature Massale Selection Syrah blocks and newer 470 and Waldron clonal material, with their different growth habits and bunch structures, along with the use of shadecloth on the afternoon sun side of the vines, helps build layers and structural complexity in the fruit.

Production Notes

The fruit was hand-picked, berry sorted, and emptied to small wooden and stainless steel fermenters via gravity. We incorporated 28% whole bunches and wild fermentation to build structure and texture and provide the framework on which to express the opulence and spice of Syrah. The wine spent 12 days on skins prior to pressing directly to fine grained, large format, French oak (7% new), followed by ageing for 11 months prior to bottling. The wine was made with minimum effective Sulphites, is unfined and minimally filtered.

96 points - "This is part of a triumvirate of wines that showcases the vineyard and winemaking that have crafted these super wines. This is not your fruit bomb Aussie shiraz. This is syrah and there is more than a little Old World style here. The fruit shows an almost luminosity that bursts from the glass. The palate picks up the vineyard characters with its ironstone gravelly rusty characters complementing the bright red fruits. You sense vineyard here with a deft touch of the winemaker simply coaxing a little more out of it." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "The 2022 Syrah brings together a beautiful confluence of a lovely vineyard and a great season. Aromatically, we see sweet balsamic, blackberry, licorlce, forest fruits, tea, steel, iodine and alplne herbs. This is a super wine, and I haven't even tasted it yet. On the palate, the wine is fresh and powerful. The tannins are pronounced but chewy and enlivening, with blood orange, saffron, a hint of sandalwood and blackberry. This is a really wonderful wine here, with the classic Frankland River splay of ferruginous tannin, rust and blood. It's super. Decant it; it will only get better, more svelte. 13. 9% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

94 points - "It’s a medium weight wine, smoky, meaty, sweet with roasted nut characters, peppery through the tannin as much as through the fruit, juiced with plum and red cherry but, as mentioned, bloody with it, ferrous, rusty, distinctive. It’s a dry wine, almost drying, but yet lengthy, and complex in shape as much as in flavour. In truth I disliked this wine, and then loved it. I’m not sure how that’s possible for the one same wine, but over the course of a day it was. As a result I’m recommending this wine, I think it’s excellent, but I’m also suggesting that it be given a decent-length decant." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

94 points - "A fine, mid-weighted syrah, reeling off scents of charcuterie, peony, lilac, clove and blue-fruit allusions, set in relief against a noble structural edifice. The tannins, often the masterstroke at this address, placate and suppress any stray fruit sweetness. Lovely strident tannins, doused in mace. Another wine to bury in the cellar for eight years or more, although drinkable now with a brisk decant." - Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com)

    Love for Swinney

Love all the Swinney reds. This is lovely to drink, deep fruit and some nice spice. Hard to think of a reason not to buy plenty more of them.

Swinney

The Swinney family's roots in Frankland River stretch back over 100 years.

George John Alexander Swinney was a pioneer of the region, settling a grazing property in Franklands in 1922. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. They are taking the family property into great new territory.

Bush vines litter the property. Riesling, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre are fining a very happy home on the ironstone slopes above the Frankland River.

Now, with Rhys Thomas as viticulturist and vineyard manager since 2021, and sixth generation winemaker Rob Mann crafting the wines in the cellar, this label is on track to become one of the regional benchmarks in short order.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
