Description

The 2022 Suckfizzle Cabernet is a serious bit of kit – bold, layered, and built to last. From one of Margaret River’s most southerly vineyards, this wine captures the full force of its cool, coastal site. Sea breezes, lean soils and a long ripening season all come together to shape a Cabernet that’s both powerful and finely tuned.

It opens with a punch of blackcurrant, dark cherry and mulberry, wrapped in savoury notes of nori, olive brine, smoked herbs and black spice. There’s real density to the fruit here, but the structure keeps things tight – silky tannins, bright acidity, and oak that adds spice without smothering the fruit. It’s generous, but never blowsy.

This is the kind of Cabernet that manages to feel classic and distinctive at once – unmistakably Margaret River, but with a bit more edge and intrigue thanks to that far-south vineyard site. You could happily tuck into it now with a good decant, but there’s clearly years of development ahead for those with patience.

A proper flagship red, and one of the strongest releases from Stella Bella’s top-tier label in recent memory.

"Awash with sweet mulberries, cassis and currants... savoury characters of nori, black olives and Dutch licorice... smooth, supple tannins and lots of them."
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Lifted aromas of mulberry, blackberry and bramble... Cassis, earth, graphite, briar and firm tannins... the length is textured and has fabulous persistence."
- Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

95 points
"Layer upon layer, woodsmoke oak spice, cinnamon, clove, leafy herbals and fruit are moulded together by firm tannins... generous but not too much, dense and lush but structured, too, and ultimately, elegant."
- Jeni Port (Wine Pilot)

95 points
"Saturated in dense Cabernet flavors of cassis and bramble, arnica/mint, black pepper, raspberry compote and licorice... the tannins are close-knit and chewy."

95 points - "What a colour – dark purple dazzled by garnet; I spent a long time staring at the wine in the glass. On with it. It’s also incredibly dense, awash with sweet mulberries, cassis and currants, laden with spices yet really savoury characters of nori, black olives and Dutch licorice, plus no shortage of cedary oak. Full-bodied, voluptuous, even, with smooth, supple tannins and lots of them. This is no wallflower and leaves a lasting impression." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Fabulous colour, really youthful, red and vibrant in the glass. Lifted aromas of mulberry, blackberry and bramble; sweet, creamy, nutty oak and dried herbs. Mid to full bodied, really bright and youthful, with a drive of pure and pristine fruit and oak. Cassis, earth, graphite, briar and firm tannins are all playing very nicely. The acidity is punchy and the length is texured and has fabulous persistence." - Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

95 points - "Some of the most common Margaret River Cabernet descriptors are density, power, nuance. I would add elegant as a suitable identifying trait; you know when you are tasting it. Suckfizzle in 2022 captured the yin and the yang of the grape, especially the power and the nuance. The black and red fruits, blackberry, blackcurrant intensity signals a solid, ripe fruit base joined by lifted violet aromatics and regional bay leaf notes. Layer upon layer, woodsmoke oak spice, cinnamon, clove, leafy herbals and fruit are moulded together by firm tannins. Together, it all works in unison. The effect is very Margaret River, generous but not too much, dense and lush but structured, too, and ultimately, elegant." - Jeni Port (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "The 2022 Suckfizzle Cabernet Sauvignon is saturated in dense Cabernet flavors of cassis and bramble, arnica/mint, black pepper, raspberry compote and licorice. The tannins are close-knit and chewy, with a succulence to them that speaks eloquently of the warm season that birthed it. This is a very good wine here, from a cool site in the region's far south. 14.2% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

93 points - "It’s pretty salty and maritime, with samphire and nori umami things, blackcurrant and blueberry, roasted red capsicum and spicy mint chocolate biscuit oak. As an aside, the colour of the wine is really impressive, with such intense purpleness that Prince might well be proud of it, though while he didn’t partake in alcohol, he may well have enjoyed looking at it. It’s medium-bodied, has something of a smoky mezcal quality in with all that dark sweet small berried intensity, and the tannin is fine-grained and sooty, acidity is balanced, then comes the sweep of intense black fruit and chocolate cake on a finish of excellent length." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Bursting with its signature cherry red fruits, charred red peppers and Nori, Suckfizzle Cabernet is medium bodied with a backbone of untamed yet silky tannin and a core of ripe Cabernet fruit enhancing the innate edginess of this southern rebel.
