2022 Radikon Slatnik

92 pts
Chardonnay and some "other white grapes", as Sasa Radikon puts it. Time on skins. Killer orange wine here from the best in the business.

Description

Slatnik sees the marriage of two grapes grown on the Radikon slopes in Oslavia: Chardonnay & Sauvignon Vert (or the variety formerly known as Tocai Friulano).

Biodynamic farming underpins all that happens in the Radikon cellar and it makes for a sturdy base on which Sasa can build his meticulous and curious creations. This spends a shorter time on skins than the wines bottled under the Blue Radikon label, and it is a much shorter time before it is released to the public, however, the impact of the wine is none too different.

The key here is the freshness and liveliness that is rarely associated with Chardonnay made with skin contact. Typically orange Chardonnays can lack a little drive, certainly not the case in the hands of Sasa Radikon.

It's a full-noise amber wine that will thrill all lovers of the wine style.

"Radikon’s wines, together with neighbour and erstwhile colleague Joško Gravner, achieved a remarkable consistency and character with their slightly wild, deep, autumnal flavours and beguiling complexity."
- Simon Woolf (Decanter)

"It’s a remarkable site, fit snug into the typical rolling hills and dales of the region, tended daily by hand to ensure greatest health of fruit and optimum (low) yield. A family affair where son Sasa and father Stanko ebb and flow from winery to vineyard and back again."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

92 points - "The 2022 Bianco Slatnik is wild with an exotic bouquet of incense and dried flowers, tangerine and hints of fresh mint. This opens with a pretty inner sweetness that gives way to tropical melon and citrus tones, all guided by juicy acidity. It finishes with admirable length and is potent yet still remarkably fresh, leaving traces of candied grapefruit and spice. This is an intense vintage of Slatnik, yet the balance cannot be denied. It’s a blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Tocai Friulano that spends eight days macerating on the skins. Drink 2024-2029." - Eric Guido (Vinous)

One of the all time greatest.

What can I say about this wine that isnt already said?

Its probably the great orange wine of all time in my opinion.

80% chardy, 20% Tokai (friuliano) most years, its got all the best characteristics of chardy with a luxurious mouth feel that goes for days. Its got energy unlike any other wine, you will feel the terroir and the land in each mouthful.

Truly a wine everyone must try at least once. Its going to show you why people get excited about orange wine.

Radikon

The Radikon family's vineyard holdings cover some 18 hectares of steep slopes in and around Oslavia, near the Slovenia/Italy border. Since 1980, Stanislao (Stanko) Radikon has made the wines alongside his wife Suzana. Their son, Sasa, has taken up the reins and is now the vocal frontman for the family business.

These wines are the benchmark for an unwavering commitment to the natural wine movement. The famous amber wines are made with extremely long skin maceration, years of time in barrel and a long rest in bottle before release. This process reveals wines that are deeply golden in colour, firmly structured, wild and of a singular character.

Radikon is not for the faint of heart. If you are a skin contact new-comer, the wines can be challenging at first. However, if you are an aficionado the style, these are some of the rarest and most sought-after creations in this genre that can be found anywhere in the world.
