Description

Chris and Andrea Mullineux have a gift for making wines that punch well above their weight, and the 2022 Kloof Street Rouge is no exception.

This blend of 57% Syrah, 27% Grenache Noir, 9% Cinsault, and 7% Tinta Barocca captures the Mediterranean-inspired style that has put Mullineux on the map.

Sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards ranging from 7 to 48 years old, the fruit comes from two key areas. Syrah and Cinsault thrive on the shale and schist soils of Kasteelberg, while Tinta Barocca and Grenache come from the decomposed granite soils of Paardeberg, creating a wine with both depth and energy.

The winemaking is equally thoughtful. After hand-harvesting, 60% of the fruit was destemmed while 40% remained whole bunch, and fermentation began naturally with indigenous yeasts. The wine matured for 11 months in third- and fourth-fill French oak barrels and large wooden vats, ensuring the oak influence stayed subtle and allowed the fruit to shine.

On the nose, you’ll find perfumed aromas of dark berries, violets, and holiday spices. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant, with flavours of blackberry, cherry, and a hint of savoury spice. Each component adds its own touch: Cinsault brings aromatic lift, Tinta Barocca adds structure, Grenache offers ripe fruit, and Syrah ties it all together beautifully.

This was the Best Value Red Wine of the Year in Master of Wine Tim Atkin's comprehensive 2024 report of South African wine. As he said, it's "Almost impossible to beat at the price."

93 points & Best Value Red of the Year
“Almost too good,” mused Chris Mullineux when he poured this wine, and I know what he means. Combining Syrah, 30% Grenache, 17% Tinta Barocca, and 10% Cinsault, it massively over-delivers at its price point, with perfumed 30% whole bunches, bramble, red cherry, and white pepper flavours, and some granitic grip and freshness. Almost impossible to beat at the price."

2022 Kloof Street Swartland Rouge
Varieties: 57% Syrah, 27% Grenache Noir, 9% Cinsault, 7% Tinta Barocca
Bottling Date: 8 December 2023
Production: 39 000 bottles / 3 250 cases
Wine of Origin: Swartland

Source of Grapes:
The grapes for our 2022 Kloof Street Rouge come from six sustainably farmed vineyard parcels in different parts of the Swartland, aged 7-48 years:
Two parcels of Syrah and one parcel of Cinsault and Grenache each from the stony Shale and Schist based soils of Roundstone farm at the foot of Kasteelberg; and the Tinta Barocca and another parcel of Syrah, all from the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg.

Date(s) Harvested:
These parcels were hand-harvested between the 1st and 22nd February 2022 with a yield of 5 tons/ha, which translated to 30 HL/ha.

Winemaking:
In order to allow for optimal protection of the grapes before hand-sorting took place, the fruit was first placed in our cold room on arrival, whereafter 60% whole bunches were destemmed to tank.
The must was initially pigeaged once a day and after indigenous yeast fermentation began, the wine was pigeaged twice a day.
Temperatures were not allowed to exceed 28°C and the total maceration lasted just under 4 weeks.
The wine was then drained and pressed to barrel for malolactic fermentation. The different parcels were racked in Spring to blend the wine, which was then returned to barrel.

Maturation:
This wine was matured for 11 months in 3rd and 4th fill French oak 225L barrels & 500L demi-muids, as well as large upright wooden vats.

Tasting Note:
Our 2022 Kloof Street Rouge brims with beautiful dark berry fruit on both the nose and palate.
This Swartland medley shows great balance, rounded with hints of holiday spice on the finish.
Each variety in the blend adds depth to the wine – the Cinsault brings perfume, Tinta Barocca brings tannin, the Grenache brings fruit character, and the Syrah ties it all together. Enjoy now and over the next 2-3 years.

Mullineux

Located in South Africa's Swartland region, Mullineux, founded by Chris and Andrea Mullineux in 2007, has swiftly become a top-tier wine brand, celebrated locally and internationally. After working in France, South Africa, and California, the Mullineuxs chose Swartland for its ancient granite and schist soils. Their dedication paid off, earning them over fifty 5-star ratings from Platter’s South African Wine Guide and multiple Winery of the Year titles.

Their winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to shine. They work with sustainable growers and cultivate their own vineyards at Roundstone Farm. Notable wines include Syrah, Chenin Blanc, and a luxurious Straw Wine. Their single-terroir wines particularly showcase the Swartland's diverse soils.

With a name meaning 'Watermill' in French, Mullineux is deeply connected to the Swartland, embodying the region's rich heritage and bright future in every bottle.
