Description

One of the most sought-after Chardonnays in Tasmania comes from the small plot of land in Tamar Valley tended by Joe and Lou Holyman.

This is a scintillating Chardonnay. The fruit is the star of the show with all of the Stoney Rise wines, and it's no different with this one. No additions during winemaking with just a dab of sulphur keeping the wine fresh and sound.

Only a painfully small amount of this wine sees the light of day. Small production and a ravenous fan base mean most of this gets snapped up from the winery in short order.

If you want a look at this release, you'll need to be quick.

"Holyman Chardonnay one of the best in the county for me... Feels very coiled and reticent as at now. Sharp steel. Distinctive. So much energy. Wait."
- 95+ pts, Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

100% Estate grown
Vine age: 36 years
0.75Ha block
Non irrigated vines
Low cropping
100% New French Oak
No fining

95+ points - "Holyman Chardonnay one of the best in the county for me. Lots of cinnamon spice, brioche, toast and struck match, but also quite a lot of seaweed and brine, in with that lemon zest, white peach and green melon. It’s tight, almost electric in intensity, with a saline fino sherry-like tang and zesty umami flavour. And length to go. Feels very coiled and reticent as at now. Sharp steel. Distinctive. So much energy. Wait." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 points & Top 100 Australian Wines of 2023 - “A compact and salty mid-weighted chardonnay. Paradoxically, an immensely expressive one, needing a workout in the glass. Demur at first, before riffs on truffled lees, acacia, toasted hazelnut and hints of white peach seep across the broadly lathered phenolic seams. Some cedar-vanilla pod oak serves as an adjunct, nestled into the fray. I adore the chew, chomp and saline spread of flavors here. The pungent mineral tension, too, across the finish. Wonderful length. A fleck of reductive flint, servicing further energy. Best after 2026. Screw cap.” - Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

    Great bargain

Tasted this alongside some solid Premier and Grand Cru Burgs. Holyman easily ranks equal, if not more. Great balance, structure and acidity - at 1/3 the price of the Burgs.

Stoney Rise

Stoney Rise is a small winery in Tasmania's Tamar Valley that has a huge reputation.

Winemaker Joe & Lou Holyman purchased the property in 2004, a picturesque site planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted in 1986.

Since then, they have developed a keen following, producing some of the most stunning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the Apple Isle. Interestingly, they also have a little Gruner Veltliner and Trousseau in the ground adding a little colour to their range.

These wines fly off the shelves. And no wonder, they are right at the top of the pile in terms of quality in Tasmania at the moment, with demand far outstripping their small production each year.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
