Description

Heathcote Estate has been one of the region’s benchmarks since the late 1990s, when the Kirby family teamed up with winemaker Tom Carson to build a site dedicated entirely to Shiraz. Their vineyard sits on the famous Cambrian soils that run through the heart of Heathcote – deep red and full of ancient ironstone that gives the wines both depth and structure.

The 2022 vintage was mild and even, perfect for slow, balanced ripening. Hand-picked fruit was fermented in small open vats with gentle handling, then matured in mostly older French oak for just over a year. The focus here is always on precision and texture rather than power.

It’s a classic Heathcote style – dark fruit, spice and a little earth, wrapped up in fine tannins and bright acidity. Medium to full-bodied but never heavy, it’s polished without feeling worked. A modern take on an Australian favourite.

A Heathcote shiraz in serious, intellectual mode delves beyond the obvious to reveal an inherent complexity and velvet-like density, all within the most elegant of shapes. Red fruits, blackberries, bracken, earth, abundant woody spices and fine tannins build layer upon layer. Brings the region's top red grape into full, glorious perspective. Deserves your attention.

The nose is deeply scented, with brooding aromas of blackcurrants, blood plums, ferric earth and spices. The palate is full-bodied with firmly integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of mulberry bush, mocha, licorice and olive tapenade. Very powerful, with an underlying freshness and seamless tannins. Drinkable or hold. Screw cap.

This Single Vineyard Shiraz comes from carefully selected sections of our family's vineyard, Heathcote Estate in Drummonds Lane, Heathcote in Central Victoria. The vineyard was planted in 1999 on the famous strip of 500 million year old Cambrian soil that defines the heart of the region.

A long bone-chilling winter in Heathcote led into a mild and suitably wet spring. Soil moisture was key to getting the season off to this great start. Mild conditions continued throughout the summer and the harvest didn’t commence until the 19th of February. The quality of the fruit was as good as we could wish for. 2022 was the first wine certified 100% organic from the estate after 4 years of transition.

WINEMAKING
Our six individual blocks and their various sections were handled separately in the winery, and vintage 2022 created 20 unique batches of wine. The grapes were fermented in traditional oak fermenters after gentle destemming, with 20% whole bunches included. The wines were then pressed and transferred into 500L French Oak puncheons for malolactic fermentation. Racked twice during maturation, bottled February 2023.

TASTING NOTE
The 2022 vintage was exceptional, producing a classic Heathcote Estate Shiraz. Characterised by its remarkable balance, this intense and structured wine has layers of flavour, dark fruits, spice and a long, seamless, persistent finish. Cellar for optimum reward.
