Description

Where the majority of his wines hail from the Barossa and Clare Valleys, winemaker Steve Crawford heads to the Adelaide Hills for his svelte interpretation of Sangiovese.

The cooler climate of the Hills allows him to pick Sangiovese that has inherent freshness. Sangiovese naturally has a serious, firm tannin structure, Crawford manages to tame it into a lighter shade of the variety.

He's nailed this wine. It's lively and nervy with loads of sweet berried fruit and a long savoury finish.

Delicious stuff, perfect for your next night at you favourite Italian BYO.

    To die for

This is one of the best sangioveses going around. Super smooth and rich texture of cherries with earthy notes in the backing. Honestly, chef’s kiss.

Since taking this vineyard on in 2017, I’ve been taken by its ability to provide very elegant, cool climate fruit expression from the nose and into the mouth, but carry present and tight Sangiovese tannin and spice to make it a compelling drink.

A mild and dry ripening season lead to a long period of flavour and tannin development. Dark cherries, plums and raspberries on the nose, with background forest floor, gamey notes. Slightly lighter palate feel due to the cooler ripening season. Cherries, spiced plums, dried rose petals, balsamic strawberries and drying tannin with a nice easy out to fresh acid and slight tea and tobacco notes.

Frederick Stevenson

Steve Crawford started his Barossa label under the pseudonym of Frederick Stevenson whilst working at a larger winery.

Now, flying solo, Steve's minimalist, vibrant vinos are garnering plenty of attention for the lighter shade of the region that they portray.

He looks for vineyards that are farmed organically or sustainably, believing that healthy vines make better wines. And little tinkering in the winery preserves the natural brightness and personality of the sites he works with.

Steve is an exciting producer and firmly part of the Barossa avant-garde movement.
