Description

Ronchi is the newest single-site Barbaresco to join Dave Fletcher’s line-up, though he’s been working with the vineyard behind the scenes since 2020. Until now, the fruit had been folded into his Recta Pete cuvee, but after a few vintages of close observation and a bit of extra TLC in the vineyard, 2022 marked the first time it stood confidently on its own.

The block itself faces east, getting the gentler morning sun rather than the full heat of the day – which paid off in a warm year like 2022. The result is a wine with real lift and precision, even in a ripe vintage. As always with Fletcher’s Barbaresco, it’s all destemmed, wild fermented and aged in old 300L barrels for two years before a short stint in bottle.

Of the three Cru bottlings, Ronchi sits right in the pocket – perfumed and pretty, but still with plenty of structure and length. Not showy, just quietly impressive.

It’s medium-bodied, a distinct stony feel to tannin, sandstone and hazelnut skin, some bergamot perfume too, a fine crunch to acidity, a twist of amaro bitterness and liquorice root, with a cool ‘minerally’ finish of excellent length. “We have been working with Ronchi fruit since 2020, using it as a valuable blending component in the ‘Recta Pete’ Barbaresco (our entry level). This is how we discover new cru vineyards worthy of singe vineyard labels. Since 2020 we have been monitoring the quality and making improvements in the vineyard so as to reach a level where we can finally present it as a single vineyard wine. In 2022 we have achieved that quality level. It’s an east facing block, receiving only morning sun and it performed beautifully in this vintage.” – David

Fletcher

Dave Fletcher fell in love with Nebbiolo early in his winemaking career.

After some time spent in the Nebbiolo Mecca, Piemonte, Dave moved his whole family and life there to pursue his passion for the variety. He took up a position as winemaker at famous producer Cerrato and still makes the wines there to this day.

His own label has been a slow labour of love to get off the ground but now it's in full swing. Through sourcing select plots of fruit from local growers in Barbaresco and planting his own vines, his small eponymous label is now taking flight.

Precious little of the Fletcher wines make it to Australia and they sell out in a flash. If you're a true enthusiast of Nebbiolo, you need to get to know Dave's wines, they offer brilliant value for money.
