The 2022 El Tamboril Tinto is one of the more elusive and serious wines in Comando G’s already tightly held lineup. It’s grown high up on decomposed granite in the Sierra de Gredos, then treated with extreme care in the cellar – fermented with the lightest of infusions (some juice fermented without skins), and matured for 18 months in a single 10,000L Stockinger foudre.
This is Garnacha, but not as you know it. No flash, no fat, no obvious fruit. It’s incredibly coiled right now – all powdery tannin, mineral drive and latent energy. The team reckons the 2016 is just hitting its stride in 2024, so this one will reward serious patience. There’s a little spice and cream from élevage, but it’s all tucked into a dry, firm, almost architectural frame.
Only 1,334 bottles were made, and as with all things Comando G, blink and it’ll be gone.
