Description

This gorgeous single-site Brouilly comes from Château de La Chaize’s home turf — their own monopole parcel at the base of Mont Brouilly. It’s a special bit of dirt, and the team treat it that way, farming organically and keeping the winemaking simple to let the site do the talking.

Everything’s done by hand. Whole bunches, wild fermentation, then time in large old foudres and concrete eggs. No polish, no tricks — just pure, dark-fruited Gamay with a little more depth and structure than your average cru Beaujolais. It’s got that Brouilly generosity, but with lovely lift and tension through the finish.

If you’re after something plush but not overworked, this walks the line beautifully. Drink it now with something salty and charred off the grill, or give it a bit of time in bottle to soften and unfurl.

"Needs a moment in the glass for the forest-berry aromas to open up. Very minerally and smoky with plenty of forest-floor character... Just a hint of blood oranges in the finish magnifies its freshness."

96 points - "Needs a moment in the glass for the forest-berry aromas to open up. Very minerally and smoky with plenty of forest-floor character. Stunning concentration and great elegance right through the extremely long and finely etched finish. Difficult to pull yourself away from this remarkable Brouilly. That this is only medium-bodied actually increases its appeal. Just a hint of blood oranges in the finish magnifies its freshness. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." - Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com)

Importer's Notes

Château de La Chaize is among the oldest, most historic estates in Burgundy’s Beaujolais region. It was completed in 1676. The project was financed by Louis XIV's personal chaplain, François de la Chaise, "and his grateful nephew, the original owner, named the chateau for his munificent uncle." The architect was Jules Hardouin-Mansart, and André Le Nôtre designed the gardens. It has been listed as an official historical monument since April 27, 1972. Cared for by the same Family for nearly three and a half centuries, the estate has been passed on to new owners, the Gruy Family, who are equally committed to managing the estate with the utmost care, while implementing an ambitious environmental plan. Among the many initiatives is the conversion of all vineyards to organic farming, the adoption of precision viticulture, reducing their carbon footprint, and recycling every by-product from viti- and vinicultural activity, to achieve zero waste.
