Description

"Angelo Gaja is, without question, the most famous wine producer in Italy. Possibly one of the most famous in the world. He is credited with developing techniques that revolutionised winemaking in Italy.
- International Wine Challenge

Magari is Ca’ Marcanda in full voice. This is the flagship red from Angelo Gaja’s Tuscan outpost - an estate that took years to find, even longer to negotiate, and now stands as one of Bolgheri’s most distinctive vineyards. The name Magari loosely translates to “if only” or “we wish,” capturing both the ambition and playfulness behind the project.

The 2022 vintage brings together Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Petit Verdot, grown across two key soil types on the estate: limestone-rich “white” soils from higher slopes and deeper, sandier “dark” soils that give juicier, rounder fruit. Each variety is fermented separately (with a portion of whole bunch), then blended after 16–18 months in oak - about a quarter of which is new.

Magari always treads that fine line between ripeness and restraint. It’s generous and plush, yes, but also lifted, composed, and unmistakably Bolgheri.

"Redcurrant, cherry and olive-leaf aromas follow through to a medium body with fine, caressing tannins and a long, juicy finish. Lightly crunchy and chewy."

95 points - "Redcurrant, cherry and olive-leaf aromas follow through to a medium body with very fine, caressing tannins and a long, juicy finish. Lightly crunchy and chewy. Extremely well crafted and delicious already, but better in a couple of years. Drink or hold." - JamesSuckling.com

Importer's Notes:

Composed of 60% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot, Magari is sourced from a mix of both white and dark soils. All varieties are vinified separately, with a 15% whole bunch component included in each fermentation.

Following fermentation, the wine is aged in oak for 16 to 18 months, with approximately 25% new oak. It is then blended, bottled, and left to mature for a few additional months before release.

The vineyards are located near the winery, all within the Bolgheri DOC and officially classified as such.

"Magari is an often-used Italian expression with different meanings:
It carries a hint of irony which leads people to smile.”
– Gaja

Gaja

The Gaja family has been producing wine in the hills of Barbaresco, Piedmont since 1859. But it was under the leadership of Angelo Gaja from the 1960s that the estate rose to global prominence, redefining what Italian fine wine could be. Today, his children - Gaia, Rossana, and Giovanni - are guiding the next chapter of the family legacy.

Gaja’s wines are a benchmark of modern Italian winemaking - bold, polished, and built for the long haul. Single-vineyard bottlings like Sorì Tildìn and Costa Russi broke new ground for Barbaresco, while plantings of Cabernet and Chardonnay challenged tradition and put Langhe on the world stage.

Beyond Barbaresco, the family now crafts celebrated wines from Bolgheri and Montalcino, and most recently, from the volcanic slopes of Etna under the IDDA label - a joint project with Alberto Graci that’s turning heads for its purity and poise. Wherever they go, Gaja remains a symbol of innovation, ambition, and Italian excellence.
