Description

This is Rob Mann's selection for the best of the best Shiraz grown on Swinney vineyard in Frankland River.

It's the finest expression of the variety he can muster. In just a couple of vintages has quickly become considered a new high watermark for WA Shiraz.

The Great Southern has always championed Shiraz/Syrah but here, the Swinney family and Mann take into rarified territory. A painful bunch and berry selection from 20+-year-old vines, a high percentage of whole bunch amplifying the spice and lift aromatics and well as structure, this is a sublime Australian expression of Shiraz that will mature gracefully for many, many years to come.

Deep inky crimson with purple hues Punchy, aromatic and complex with a distinct black pepper spice complemented by blueberry fruit, mulberries and nori seaweed. Medium to full bodied the underlying fruit intensity and complexity define a distinct personality. Dark, mineral, briny, spicy, earthy, and black fruited the palate is textural with mouthcoating tannins with resplendent fruit clarity and overall length.
The fruit was hand-picked, berry sorted and gravity fed to a French oak vat and two demi-muids. We incorporated 58% whole bunches followed by wild fermentation to build structure and texture while promoting the bright and spicy aromatics. The wine spent 12 days on skins prior to pressing directly to fine-grained, large format, seasoned, three and four-year-old French oak, followed by aging for 11 months prior to bottling. The wine was made with minimum effective Sulphites, it is unfined and minimally filtered.

97 Points - "The 2021 Farvie Syrah is lighter and finer than the Mourvèdre, yet it is darker in the glass and more mouthfilling. I suppose, in some ways, the flavor profile here is more expected, yet the tannic structure of the thing is more refined and sleek than I have seen in previous vintages. There are notes of blackberry, star anise, iodine, blueberry, licorice and a slash of bone broth. It also has black pepper and aniseed, but not in the warm-climate framework that we are used to seeing/experiencing from regions like Barossa or McLaren Vale. It is odious to compare, I concede, but important from a contextual standpoint. This is Frankland, with its own signature. Syrah continues to be sourced from the two blocks—Powderbark and Wilsons Pool, both home to the WA clone—the Houghton massal selection. This saw no new oak (as per usual), and comes in at a very modest 13.5% alcohol. It is a profoundly elegant wine now, but it will only be better, more complex, more svelte and more complete as time wears on." - 97 + pts, Erin Larkin (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

96 Points - "No doubt the Rhône keeps a close eye on what goes on over here, especially in the Barossa and McLaren Vale. Now, they better start paying serious attention to these guys, although if they do, they might be more than a bit worried by what they see. Such a good range of wines here, and this isn’t even the pointy end stuff! Swinney might just be the most exciting winery to emerge in Australia over the last few years. This hails from specific sites in their Powderbark and Wilson’s Pool vineyards. The fruit is berry sorted and then to a mix of wooden and stainless steel fermenters by gravity. 22% whole bunches are included. Wild fermentation and then twelve days on skins before pressing direct to fine-grained large format French oak, of which 12% was new for 11 months maturation. Deep blood red and maroon in colour, we have notes of black fruits, chocolate, animal hides, earth, leather, spices, cloves and florals. A supple texture and there is immaculate balance at every turn plus fine satiny tannins. Bright acidity runs the full journey and helps to drive the palate with very good length. A decade or more ahead, though a cracker now. This, and other wines in this range, are really putting pressure on their big guns (the Farvie range). The score will surely go higher if you have patience." - Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot)

Swinney

The Swinney family's roots in Frankland River stretch back over 100 years.

George John Alexander Swinney was a pioneer of the region, settling a grazing property in Franklands in 1922. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. They are taking the family property into great new territory.

Bush vines litter the property. Riesling, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre are fining a very happy home on the ironstone slopes above the Frankland River.

Now, with Rhys Thomas as viticulturist and vineyard manager since 2021, and sixth generation winemaker Rob Mann crafting the wines in the cellar, this label is on track to become one of the regional benchmarks in short order.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
