Description

This is the first ever iteration of a straight Mourvedre under the Farvie range, and an extremely exciting, modern offering of the variety at that.

The fruit was hand picked from small section of estate vines, fermented as 100% whole bunches for extra bright, spicy aromatics and texture. A savoury red full of structured tannins holding a core of red and blue fruits dusted with spice.

Only 63 dozen of this wine were produced, so if you want to try the first ever Farvie Mourvedre you better swoop quick.

Medium deep magenta Immediately rusty and ferrous with a complex mix of dark cherries, white pepper, boiled lollies and lavender. Medium to full bodied and with a core of tight fine structural and savoury tannins around which the complex mix of red and blue fruits, light aniseed, and black pudding flavours are tethered. Lively and ethereal with wonderful length.

The fruit was hand-picked and gravity fed to two upright French oak demi muids. We incorporated 100% whole bunches followed by wild fermentation to build structure and texture while promoting the bright and spicy aromatics. The wine spent 11 days on skins, including late foot stomping, prior to pressing directly to a single 600L four- year-old French oak demi muid, followed by aging for 11 months prior to bottling. The wine was made with minimum effective Sulphites, it is unfined and minimally filtered.

98 Points - "The 2021 Farvie Mourvèdre is the first iteration of a varietal Mourvèdre in the Farvie range since its inception in 2018. In the glass, the wine is light—one can almost see through it. It is light to medium-bodied, sure, but shaped by gritty, firm, tight-knit tannins. My first feeling is that this has a Barolo edge to it, which I find both deeply interesting and pleasurable at once. It is fine, floral and firm. There are notes of rose petals, tar, grit, resin, tobacco leaf, mulberry leaf and white pepper. The length unfurls in the mouth and is reminiscent of mineral European reds—Piedmonte over Chateauneuf-du-Pape, if I had to choose one for reference. This is fresh, vital, exciting and modern, an exceptional wine. Let it grow on you, because grow it will. 63 dozen produced." - Erin Larkin (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

95 Points - "I tasted it side by side with the regular Mourvèdre 2021 which is only 50% whole bunch. The latter has pine needles, fresh mountain forest feel, dark earth, rustic elements, blue and black fruit, and loads of black pepper on the palate. Farvie is everything above dialled up with extra finesse. Filled with fresh and very ripe blackberries, blueberries, double the impact on the palate and length, plenty of chalky-squeaky tannin but super fine, round, spreading evenly across the palate. It’s a mouthful of floral perfume, juicy meatiness and utter elegance." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

95 Points - "Deep-ish red with a good tint of purple and some floral overtones to the herb and berry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and the concentrated flavour is underlined by earthy/tarry graphite-like tannins that impart a touch of typical mataro bitterness. Long finish. A very good mourvèdre that will shine with some protein-rich food. Deserves some cellar time" - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

93 Points - "This is quite fine. Full-weighted, with subtle, darker fruit inflections tucked behind a bone of very firm, ferruginous tannins. Charcuterie and dried tobacco. Licorice root, clove and allspice. The sooty finish, unwinding with air. This is a powerful, prodigiously savory wine. There is nothing heavy about it. The tannins meld with the fruit from attack to the long finish. There is plenty in store for those who are patient. Best after 2025." - Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com)

Swinney

The Swinney family's roots in Frankland River stretch back over 100 years.

George John Alexander Swinney was a pioneer of the region, settling a grazing property in Franklands in 1922. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. They are taking the family property into great new territory.

Bush vines litter the property. Riesling, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre are fining a very happy home on the ironstone slopes above the Frankland River.

Now, with Rhys Thomas as viticulturist and vineyard manager since 2021, and sixth generation winemaker Rob Mann crafting the wines in the cellar, this label is on track to become one of the regional benchmarks in short order.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
