Description

As with all of the Mewstone wines, this is a Riesling made with only the deftest of touches.

Winemaker, Jonathan Hughes, keeps things minimal in the winery to craft wines that are expressive of the single sites they come from. The quality of the fruit from their vineyard in the d'Entrecasteaux Channel is out of this world - something exemplified here in this Riesling.

Fleshy, zingy and full of delightful citrus, but with an added element of textural complexity from time spent in old oak and on its lees to mature. A real pleasure to drink.

Picked on April 19th and May 2nd, the fruit was whole bunch pressed, put to old oak and naturally fermented. As the cellar cooled in late autumn so too did the ferment. Fermentation extended out to 38 days before we called a halt as the sugars and acidity found the balance we were after. Matured on lees through to late spring before filtering and bottling. 1392 bottles without fining.

92 Points - "Hand picked, whole-bunch pressed to used French oak, fermented for 38 days then held on lees until spring. If riesling can be full bodied, this is one. The colour is deep, the bouquet complex and the volume of ripe citrus fruit outweighs the usual Tasmanian acidity. Very useful for broad food matching" - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 Points - "<span class="cs-reviewBody">The colour is deeper than most for its age, a medium yellow hue, with a left-field bouquet of baked lemon pudding, a note of poached peach too, and faintly nutty from subtle barrel work. The palate is rich and rounded, ample and soft, with a quite different shape from the classic steely Oz riesling styles. Concentration, drive, generosity. A very tidy wine." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)</span>

94 Points - "The fruit for this 2021 D'Entrecasteaux Channel Riesling was handpicked, whole-bunch pressed to seasoned French oak, fermented utilizing wild yeasts for 38 days and aged on lees until spring. On the nose, the wine shows custard apples, crushed shells, brine, dry grasses (hay, straw, etc.) and green apple skins. In the mouth, it is all of these things with a core of salted preserved citrus. This is very smart, with a slick texture and spooling, juicy acidity through the finish. Mineral and rich, balanced and poised, it's excellent." - Erin Larkin (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

Mewstone

Mewstone Wines is a joint venture between Jonny and Matt Hughes, two Tasmanian born wine-heads, and their respective wives Margie and Cathie.

The two families have invested in a small plot of land on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in the charmingly named locality of Flowerpot, on the south-eastern tip of Tasmania. Matt works the grapes, Jonny makes the wines, taking what he learnt from seven years as assistant winemaker at Moorilla and re-imagining it for his own label.

The Hughes & Hughes wines offer some of the best value to be found in Tasmania at the moment, and the Mewstone premium range focuses on exceptional single-vineyard wines made in a style that Jonny wants to drink. James Halliday called them, "an utterly exceptional wine producer". Keep an eye on this ambitious pair as their star continues to rise.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
