Description

Perched just over the border from Serralunga in Castiglione Falletto, the Parussi cru has become one of Massolino’s most distinctive wines. The soils here are lighter Sant’Agata marls, flecked with silt and iron, giving more vigour to the vines and shaping a Barolo that stands apart from its Serralunga siblings. Where Margheria or Vigna Rionda bring iron and muscle, Parussi trades in perfume, precision and a taut mineral line.

The 2021 is one of the most thrilling editions yet. It opens slowly in the glass, moving from crushed flowers and wild berries to notes of limestone, spice and faint herbs. The palate is beautifully detailed, red-fruited and silken, with tannins that are fine yet long and insistent - true to the cru’s reputation for structure, but carried with grace and balance. There’s a vibrancy and persistence here that makes it utterly captivating.

Massolino has worked this vineyard since 2007, and it remains the jewel of their Castiglione holdings. In a vintage as balanced and expressive as 2021, Parussi shines with uncommon clarity. This is Barolo for the cellar - powerful but poised, and destined to reveal layers of complexity over the next decade and beyond.

Luminous and expressive, with tar, dried rose petals and crushed cranberries. The palate is medium-bodied with delicate, delineated fruit. It’s juicy and incisive, with precise, polished tannins and a delicate finish. Very detailed and nuanced, it’s on the ethereal end of the spectrum. Drink or hold.

The Massolino 2021 Barolo Parussi draws its fruit from Castiglione Falletto at the center of the appellation with an interesting overlay of old and newer soils. This wine is less immediately aromatic and needs extra time in the glass to develop and flesh out. At this young stage, it delivers tight wild berry and you also get a pretty signature of crushed limestone. That elegant mineral note ties in nicely with the silky tannins. The Parussi excels in a balanced vintage such as this.

Such perfume and it’s just so good to smell, red fruits, spice, dried roses, a cinch of orange peel. It’s light on its feet the tannin sits perfectly and the acidity is bright and balanced, some almond and a cool mineral feel. Such length. Beautiful wine.

Massolino

The Massolino family's history as winegrowers in Serralunga stretches back more than a century.

Founded in 1896 by Giovanni Massolino, the family's history is richly intertwined with that of the whole region. They now farm 23 hectares across prime real estate in the Serralunga sub-region, with premium holdings on the famed slopes of Margheria, Parafada and the legendary vineyard Vigna Rionda.

These are wines that, while classic, have continued to evolve over each generation in pursuit of the purest expression of the beloved Nebbiolo grape.

One of the great wine families of Piedmont and the wines are prized in the best cellars and restaurants in the world.
