Description

It's near on impossible to find a class act Tassie Chardonnay that won't burn a hole in your pocket, such is the demand for fruit on the Apple Isle.

But brothers Jonny and Matt Hughes have pulled a bit of a rabbit out of the hat with this one.

This is fruit from the across the state - from Coal River to Derwent Valley to North West - fermented all in barrel with partial malo and maturing on lees. Remarkable that they can turn out a wine this good at the price, the Hughes lads are certainly ones to watch.

Just about as good as you will see for Tasmanian Chardonnay at this price.

Bargain.

Fruit from vineyards in the Coal River (Clarence House and Brinktop), Derwent Valley (Kinvarra) and North West (White Rock). 80% whole bunch pressed, 20% cold-soaked on skins for five days, all naturally fermented in oak (25% new). Partial malolactic fermentation (approx 50%) while maturing on lees for five months. Bottled unfined and filtered.

93 Points - "It's a flinty, citrussy, leaner style but it has excellent carry and an all-round elegant feel. It works. White peach and white flowers are the main flavour-drivers, along with citrus, and all the way through to the long aftertaste it feels both convincing and harmonious. There's nothing to hesitate over here." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

93 Points - "A nice dose of struck-match sulphide on the nose makes way for a core of grapefruit, lemon pith and wet earth. The bold core of fruit is not weighed down by sulphides on the palate, rather the fruit core shines through. This is a classy Aussie chardonnay, clever winemaking adds complexity while respecting the fruit. It's harmonious and fine, drinking very well in its youth. It's not a powerhouse, rather everything just falls cleverly into place." - Gabrielle Poy (The Real Review)

    I love this Chardonnay!

This is a wonderful modern Chardonnay - fruit driven, with soft and well-integrated oak, with gentle and restrained malolactic fermentation. Highly recommended!

    Enjoyable chardy

The palate was refined with the malo in perfect balance for me. Grapefruit and a touch of honey on the finish that I’m sure will develop after a few years in the cellar. Wish I’d bought more!!

Mewstone

Mewstone Wines is a joint venture between Jonny and Matt Hughes, two Tasmanian born wine-heads, and their respective wives Margie and Cathie.

The two families have invested in a small plot of land on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in the charmingly named locality of Flowerpot, on the south-eastern tip of Tasmania. Matt works the grapes, Jonny makes the wines, taking what he learnt from seven years as assistant winemaker at Moorilla and re-imagining it for his own label.

The Hughes & Hughes wines offer some of the best value to be found in Tasmania at the moment, and the Mewstone premium range focuses on exceptional single-vineyard wines made in a style that Jonny wants to drink. James Halliday called them, "an utterly exceptional wine producer". Keep an eye on this ambitious pair as their star continues to rise.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
