Description

Looking for top-tier Nebbiolo that won’t send your wallet into shock? The 2021 Gioso Langhe Nebbiolo might just be the best value Nebbiolo you’ll find on the shelves right now. Sourced from Barolo’s prestigious communes—Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto—this wine offers serious pedigree without the hefty price tag. Crafted by the talented team at Sordo, it’s got complexity, texture, and a balance that can easily rival the big names.

When first poured, it’s not going to shout from the rooftops with bold colour or bombastic aromas. But give it some time and some air, and this Nebbiolo slowly unwinds into something special for the dollars asked. It’s the perfect "everyday" Nebbiolo that also rewards patience, making it one you can drink now or stash away for a few years of delicious anticipation.

Expect layers of fresh cherry, slatey tannins, earthy spice, and just a hint of liquorice, wrapped around a core of vibrant acidity that keeps you coming back for more. This Nebbiolo is elegance in a glass—fun, approachable, but with enough depth to keep you hooked. Whether it’s a Tuesday night pasta or a low-key weekend dinner, this is the kind of wine that fits any occasion.

For this kind of quality, you’d usually pay double in this region. Stock up while you can—you might even find yourself hoarding bottles for those rainy days.

"Totally unique and captivating, as you’d expect, you can smell what is to follow, which is an astonishingly sophisticated marriage of fruit and structure – acidity and fine, fine tannins in sync, side by side, spicy, lingering, perfectly designed for the table where it is an astute gastronomic partner. Fabulous value as well."

"This is a ripper... It’s so fine boned and restrained. Could be, likely is, the best, ‘entry level’ Langhe nebb I have seen. Blown away." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

96 points - "Sitting under the Sordo umbrella of great Nebbiolo wines, the fruit here is sourced mostly from Roero with a few offcuts out of Barolo. No surprise then that this announces itself with a super intense, dark crimson rose petal bouquet, that old-world term telling of perfume and earth and herbal notes of bouquet garni, thyme and sage to the fore. 94 points - "From Giorgio Sordo this is Gioso, an alt-range from that producer. This has some mettle and thrust. It’s a blend of sites, as I believe, and hangs out in big, older Slavonian oak barrels. This is a ripper. Also, this is not the actual label, but you get the gist. It’s got that almost glass-shard tension and gloss, so slender, a succulence that leaves a distinct pucker and a mouth-watering freshness. Tannins ripple beautifully, ultra fine, indeed; I couldn’t quite believe the price and status of the wine for this high quality tension, minerality and general persistence. Whoa. Tart, just ripe red cherry, rose hip tea, hazelnut savouriness, black tea and a curious elderflower, floral lift with a faint sooty spice and clove character underlying – lots and lots on. It’s so fine boned and restrained. Could be, likely is, the best, ‘entry level’ Langhe nebb I have seen. Blown away." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

93 points - "Anyone who enjoys delicious Piedmont reds will surely be familiar with the family operation of Sordo (I say family, but it is one of the larger producers in the region and has a more extensive portfolio of Barolo crus than almost any other producer). This wine is a mix of Nebb fruit from various parts of Barolo – Gioso is simply the name given to a range at the winery in honour of the patriarch and head of operations, Giorgio Sordo). 2021 is another superb vintage in the region. This is an alluring style with earthy notes, mushrooms, animal skins, leather, soy, dry herbs and a touch of redcurrants. There is focus and grip here with impressive length. Time in the glass saw gorgeous cherries emerge. This will provide pleasure for at least a decade and is cracking value. If the prices of Barolo cause you pause, jump all over this. All the glories of Piedmont without a crippling price tag (though they are nothing like Burgundy, so filling your cellar now with good Barolo will make you look wise in the years to come)." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)
