Description

The 'Coste di Rose' is Giuseppe Vaira's secret weapon.

Perched between two of Barolo's greatest vineyards, Cannubi & Bussia, Coste di Rose produces the kind of Barolo that will make you blush. It's the more ethereal, seductive side of Nebbiolo on show here, rather than one of out-and-out power.

It’s a steep little dune of pure sandstone, and it gives Nebbiolo a very different voice: lighter on its feet, but still serious where it counts.

The 2021 is all crushed flowers and cherry skin, with a dusty, herbal edge that keeps it grounded. There’s this rosy, almost candied perfume that’s unmistakably Coste. And while it’s the most open and giving of Vajra’s Barolo lineup, there’s plenty tucked away in the corners - mint, tea, saline grip - that’ll keep it going for years if you’re patient.

If Ravera is muscle and Bricco delle Viole is precision, this is charm. Vaira says this is the most approachable of his Crus, though for the patient, there will be plenty of rewards should you cellar it for a decade or more.

"In 2021 it’s moved up a notch I reckon... Red cherry, almond, liquorice and mint, rose oil... very fine crushed rock tannin, slightly ferrous with some tobacco savouries on a finish of excellent length. Beautiful wine."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

"Fragrant and floral with notes of heritage rose, tar, and linseed oil; beautifully clear and expressive on the palate."
- Monica Larner (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

"Classic Barolo aromas of wild red berries, rose petal and spice; smooth, delicious, and impeccably balanced with a minty finish."
- Kerin O’Keefe

"Intoxicating nose of violets, roses, and blueberries; compact palate with superfine tannins and a polished, structured finish."

96 points - "In 2021 it’s moved up a notch I reckon... Red cherry, almond, liquorice and mint, rose oil. It’s medium to full-bodied, red fruits, black tea and floral mouth-perfume, freshness to acidity, a sort of redcurrant and ‘mineral’ coolness, very fine crushed rock tannin, slightly ferrous with some tobacco savouries on a finish of excellent length. Beautiful wine." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96 points - “The G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Coste di Rose (a certified organic wine) is especially fragrant and floral in this vintage. It could be the power of suggestion given the wine’s name (“slope of roses”), but you absolutely get hints of heritage rose or rose hip in this beautiful Nebbiolo. The 2021 vintage hits the ball out of the park. There are characteristic hints of tar and something that reminds me of oil paints or linseed oil. I love the clarity of the mouthfeel.” - Monica Larner (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

96 points - “Loaded with finesse, the 2021 Coste di Rose has classic Barolo aromas of wild red berry, rose petal, camphor and spice. It’s smooth and delicious, doling out wild raspberry, strawberry compote, star anise and black tea before a minty finish. Polished tannins and fresh acidity keep it impeccably balanced. While already tempting, the best is yet to come.” - Kerin O’Keefe

96 points - “What an intoxicating nose of flowers like violets and roses and hints of cedar and blueberries. The palate is compact, with delineated fruit and superfine, elegant tannins. Succulent, but with a lovely, polished, underlying structure. Already a joy to drink, but will surely improve substantially with a couple of years of bottle age.” - Jacobo Garcia-Andrade Llamas (JamesSuckling.com)

Coste di Rose is one of Barolo’s best kept secrets. It is located on a steep slope, hidden from the village, that rises from Bosco della Fava and descends swiftly towards Monforte d’Alba. A dune of pure sandstone with a unique soil composition that marks Barolo DOCG Coste di Rose with its distinctive character: tones of cherry and rose petals, mint and sweet spices, a silky tannin and a juicy sip. 100% Nebbiolo. Coste di Rose MGA, Comune di Barolo.

In 2021, fruit was harvested on October 12th and 18th, destemmed and vinified in custom-designed tini. Vinification lasted 54 days under a submerged cap. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation occurred in the following spring. Aged for 26 months in large Slavonian casks of 25 and 40 hectolitres. Bottled on June 25th, 2024.

The 2021 Barolo Coste di Rose is elegant, with an expressive nose of rose petals, crushed flowers, candied cherry, mint and a whiffle of rosehip. The palate shows chiseled tannins and delicate savory tones, cherry pie and a lingering iodine reminiscence. – Squadra Vajra

G.D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra is a small, artisanal family producer and one of the benchmark modern day producers in Barolo.

The wines are now made by the family's second generation, with Giuseppe in the winemaking driver's seat supported by his siblings; Isidoro and Francesca under the watchful eye of father and founder Aldo and their mother Milena.

These are stunning examples of the regional staple varieties, made with one eye on tradition and one on progression. With holdings in the commune of Barolo as well as Novello, Sinio and Serralunga, they cover some of the most sought-after terroir in the region and make the most of it.

As noted wine writer Antonio Galloni once wrote, theirs is “a world of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level”.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
