Description

Cornelissen only makes a couple of whites, but they are fascinating, rich, salty, uncompromising wines.

This is a blend of Grecanico and Carricante, with four days of skin contact, and no additions. It is beautifully pure for a natural wine, and while rich, almost oily, there is drive and persistence to the gingery, herbal and stonefruit flavours.

Munjebel is a local descriptor for Mount Etna.

93 points - "For me, this is often Frank’s most consistent and best wine, or at least the one I repeat offend on the most. It’s usually around a blend of 50% grecanico dorato and 50% carricante, from the northern slopes of Etna and a few different vineyards. Textural white, is the game.

It’s a beautiful wine, pretty with its floral lift, chamomile, lemon ginger tea, some whiffs of sea spray, some green apple (dried and fresh), a touch of smoky spice and minty herbs. Slips over the palate well, delivers some crunch and a long trail of briny minerality. It doesn’t seem flashy or deep this year, does its job well, is a thirst-quencher with some pizzazz. The light skin contact we apply on our white wines results in a combination of density as well as elegance and makes this wine very suited to accompany a wide variety of dishes and cuisine, from fish to white meat. The vineyards (Calderara, Borriglione, Crasà and Picciolo) are located between 620 and 750 m. asl

Our farming philosophy is based on our acceptance of the fact that man will never be able to understand nature’s full complexity and interactions. We therefore choose to concentrate on observing and learning the movements of Mother Earth in her various energetic and cosmic passages and prefer to follow her indications as to what to do, instead of deciding and imposing ourselves. Consequently this has taken us to possibly avoiding all treatments on the land we cultivate, wether homeopathic, organic or biodynamic.

Belgian native turned cult natural winemaking hero, Frank Cornelissen makes some of the most intriguing raw wines in Sicily's Etna region.

Cornelissen rejects the notion of interfering with Mother Earth at any point in the grape-growing and winemaking process. No additions of any kind - neither in the vineyard nor the cellar - just a stripped-back representation of some of the world's most fascinating volcanic terroir.

Scrambling for allocations of these wines regularly hits a fever pitch. They are only ever available for a limited time. They are one of the gems of the natural wine world.
