Description

Cascina delle Rose has been quietly making some of the most compelling wines in Barbaresco for decades - without fanfare, without compromise. The Rio Sordo cru is where it all began for them, and it remains the beating heart of the estate. It’s a steep, rugged site with serious pedigree, and in a year like 2021 - cool, slow, beautifully balanced - it shows off everything Nebbiolo can be.

This is the bolder, more brooding side of the Cascina delle Rose lineup. There’s a dark, savoury core here - black cherry, spice, dried rose, a bit of undergrowth - and tannins that are firm but beautifully integrated. It’s powerful but not pushy, with that trademark lift and elegance they nail year after year. There’s no small oak, no heavy-handed winemaking - just long maceration, old Slavonian botti, and time.

It’s a wine that speaks softly but carries real weight. If you love Barbaresco with structure and soul, this one’s worth getting to know.

96+ points
"Structured and gritty, with etched mineral notes recalling pencil shavings and crushed rock. A core of delicate berry, wild cherry and blue flower creates an elegant, streamlined effect. Finishes with fine, silky texture. A 3,800-bottle release."
- Monica Larner (The Wine Advocate)

95+ points
"Blackberry, dark cherry, and spice with earthy black tea. Denser and more powerful than Tre Stelle, with stony tannins and a dark, spiced finish. Less finesse, more grunt—The Rolling Stones to Tre Stelle's Beatles. Time will be kind."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96+ points - "It's impossible not to be excited by this wine. Showing more structure and grit compared to the others in this portfolio, the Cascina delle Rose 2021 Barbaresco Rio Sordo boasts etched mineral notes that recall pencil shavings or crushed rock. Those frame a pretty core of delicate berry, wild cherry and blue flower. The effect is ample, elegant and streamlined. The wine finishes with a fine, silky texture. This is a 3,800-bottle release." - Monica Larner (The Wine Advocate)

95+ points - "Blackberry, dark cherry, lots of spice, with an earthy black tea character. This is denser and more broad-shouldered than the Tre Stelle, less perfume and finesse, more grunt and grip, though it does have some dried rose perfume, and lavish stony tannin, and cranks through the finish with power and dark spice. It’s a terrific wine, though kind of closed in as at now. It’s the Rolling Stones as opposed to The Beatles (Tre Stelle). In short, more power, less delicacy, though it’s still a bloody good wine. Time will be kind." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The soils are of marine origin from the Tertiary era, characterized by bluish marl (at a depth ranging from 1 to 3 meters), calcareous, compact structure. The stratification is dense and varied, rich in mineral salts and natural springs.

Barbaresco Rio Sordo receives careful grape selection in the vineyard – 100% Nebbiolo. The immediately noticeable characteristics are the considerable complexity and depth, accompanied by elegance and finesse.

Bright and transparent garnet red colour, clean and clear dark fruits, sweet spices, Mediterranean scrub, undergrowth. Dense, important tannin, good structure and depth, elegant and austere. Long final persistence.
