Description

The Sauvignon Blanc vines on the Domaine A vineyard were in great peril. Ruth Althaus asked her husband Peter to pull out the small amount of Sauvignon Blanc vines that were already established at Domaine A when they took ownership of the property, with a view to plant more Cabernet vines, as was the focus of their project.

Thankfully, Peter ignored this request and tended the vines in secret for a few years before revealing the wine to her. It was a brave, yet ultimately brilliant move.

And so, the Lady A was born.

It turned out to be Ruth's favourite wine in their esteemed range. It's now considered a benchmark for powerful, cellar-worthy Sauvignon Blanc in Australia and sits in rare air amongst the very finest white wines that this country has to offer.

About Domaine A

Domaine A's origins date back to the planting of the Stoney Vineyard in 1973, the oldest Pinot vineyard in the Coal Valley in Southern Valley.

But the main history starts with Peter and Ruth Althaus acquiring the Stoney Vineyard in 1989 - they’d been searching the southern hemisphere for the perfect cool-climate vineyard—an Antipodean answer to the great estates of France and Germany. The evolution of great Bordeaux-influenced red and white wines in this sunny part of the Apple Isle has been extraordinary.

Peter and Ruth recently passed the Domaine A baton onto David Walsh of Moorilla Estate and Mona fame, with the wines now being made Domaine A by Moorilla winemaker Conor van der Reest.

95 Points - "This wine is always a bit of treat, and this release is no exception. The parade it puts on. The crystallised fruits, the creme brûlée, the custard apples, the integration of pineapple, passionfruit, peach and herb butter. It’s a wide array served in silky smooth style. The wines creamy vanillin aspects are kept fresh and fruity; the wine’s inherent power never feels heavy." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Very perfumed and expressive aromas of dried mangoes, pineapple, lemon peel, chalk, cashew nuts and gun smoke. The palate is very textural with a full-bodied mouthfeel, giving notes of orange blossoms, creme, brulee, puff pastry and flint. A unique sauvignon that is picked ripe and built in the winery while having an underlying minerality. Delicious." - James Suckling

93 Points - "Bright, medium-yellow colour showing both wood-age and some bottle development. Vanilla, milk chocolate, spices. The bouquet is very complex and oak-influenced at the same time as it’s varietal. Lavishly oaked, and not unlike a high-end Bordeaux blanc. Powerful flavour and a long carry, which is dry and firm. It really needs more time for the components to harmonise and soften." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

The typically beautiful bouquet is classic Lady A—bountiful, opulent and layered. Light, tropical fruit (pineapple, peach skins, lemongrass) balance delicately against some crisper citrus and orchard fruits, before a palate that’s seductive, silky and vibrant. Nectarine, lemon curd and tightly integrated buttery oak notes carry, leading to a crisp, well-balanced finish.
