Description

The Belford vineyard sits at the northern tip of Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley holdings and is always one of our favourites in the single vineyard series. It’s one of the most distinctive sites in the Valley. The vineyard sits furthest from the Brokenback Range, meaning warmer days and a slightly riper fruit profile - Semillon here tends to show a touch more weight and texture than its southern siblings.

The 2019 vintage followed another outstanding year, continuing a run of warm, dry seasons that produced pristine, small-berried fruit. Handpicked and lightly pressed, the juice fermented cool in stainless steel before resting on fine lees for six weeks. The resulting wine is classic Belford: ripe citrus and stone fruit aromas, a dense, almost honeyed palate and that hallmark phenolic texture that gives the wine extra depth and drive.

We love this wine for how it captures both the generosity of the site and the finesse of Tyrrell’s touch. It’s Semillon with substance - bright and powerful now, but built to age gracefully for decades. A living piece of Hunter Valley history that continues to overdeliver every single vintage.

This wine displays the hallmark intensity of this unique site, defined by its talc-like sandy soils. Despite its bottle age, it remains beautifully fresh, with alluring notes of persimmon, smoky lime and lemon curd. The palate is expansive and supple, delivering excellent flavour intensity with harmonised acidity and a wet stone underlay. It opens beautifully with time in the glass, finishing clean, lemony and long.

Light, bright yellow; dry straw and the beginnings of toast and honeycomb on the bouquet; the palate rich and deep, with refinement and delicacy but also expansive flavour that is generous and powerful, clean and dry but beautifully balanced, and very long in the finish. This is drinking superbly now and has a long life ahead: it has generosity as well and finesse. A great semillon.

great wine still young but a classic

The Tyrrell family leases the Belford Vineyard. It is our northern-most Semillon vineyard and was planted in 1933. Situated furthest away from the Brokenback range, it has the most broken-down soil of all our vineyard sites, with a consistency similar to that of talcum powder.

The 2019 vintage in the Hunter Valley was another high-quality year across all varieties and was a stellar follow up to 2018. Continued dry conditions meant cropping levels were slightly lower than normal however all of the fruit was in perfect condition with intense concentration.

The fruit was lightly pressed before the free-run juice was fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wine spent approximately six weeks on fine lees before being prepared for bottling in mid-July.

Belford Semillon this year shows its typical ripe citrus aromatics, with hints of white stone fruit. The palate is dense and robust with a touch of honey that sits behind the riper citrus flavours. More phenolic texture than the other wines give this year’s Belford Semillon another layer of flavour.

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.
