Description

Vat 47 is an important piece of Australian wine history. First released in 1971, it was the country’s first commercial Chardonnay, and it’s still setting the standard more than 50 years on. The 2024 continues that legacy with classic Hunter Valley richness, precision and quiet confidence.

Made entirely from estate-grown fruit, much of it off old vines on the Short Flat Vineyard, it’s fermented and matured in French oak with a focus on texture and balance rather than overt oak flavour. The result is a full-bodied Chardonnay with depth and generosity, but also freshness and structure to carry it.

This is a wine that consistently over-delivers - drinking beautifully young, but with a strong track record in the cellar. Over the years, the style has freshened up considerably, making this a proper modern Hunter Chardonnay that nods to its roots without being stuck in them.

"Very good Chardonnay from Tyrrell’s in 2024... It’s still a baby now, and needs a couple of years to resolve. It’s a smooth, suave, and a really good Vat 47."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

97 points - "A class act, layered and generous with fabulous inherent tension. The flavours sail effortlessly through the palate, enhanced by impossibly classy, fine oak. It has the tone of the warmer year, yet reduced yields have delivered phenomenal concentration, with plentiful poached pear, ripe lemon and white peach fruit, balanced and shaped by a beautiful acid line. It is an aromatically captivating wine of distinction, with succulent flavours and impressive length." - Toni Paterson (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Refined and complex aromas of fresh lemons, white peaches, nectarines, grilled nuts, struck match, flint and lime curd. The palate is tense, with mineral-driven acidity and a creamy texture, giving layers of citrus, stone fruit and fine oak spices. Long and focused, with real persistence. Drink or hold. Screw cap." Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

95+ points - "Very good Chardonnay from Tyrrell’s in 2024. About 15% new oak, 40% second use, the rest old. Lime and white peach, light creamy vanilla and cinnamon oak gives it some extra perfume. Medium-bodied, a roundness and generosity to flavour, though it’s still quite discreet in context, some hazelnut, balanced acidity, flinty, with a gently spicy finish of excellent length. It’s still a baby now, and needs a couple of years to resolve. It’s a smooth, suave, and a really good Vat 47." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Customer Reviews

Vat 47 Chardonnay comes entirely from our Short Flat Vineyard, where the original Chardonnay vines were planted by Murray Tyrrell in 1968. The soil profile in this dry grown vineyard is unlike that of any of our other vineyards, which gives Vat 47 its unique character.

All the fruit was handpicked between January 8 and 15. The fruit was immediately basket-pressed, and the free-run juice was transferred to French oak barriques to complete fermentation and nine months maturation before bottling in October.

Stonefruit and creaminess on the nose with a hint of ginger spice from the oak. The palate displays grapefruit citrus and a lingering rich fruit sweetness. Textural, savoury elements from the slight solids ferment that gives the palate a lovely grain, balanced by the hallmark Vat 47 acid structure.

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
