Description

Vat 8 has long been one of the Hunter’s go-to reds for the cellar - a regional classic that brings Shiraz and Cabernet together in a way that feels distinctly Australian. The 2023 continues that line, with fruit drawn from some of Tyrrell’s best estate vineyards.

Shiraz leads the blend, giving plushness and spice, while Cabernet brings structure and a bit of grip through the finish. It’s aged in small French oak barrels (225L), enough to add polish without smothering the fruit. The result is a fuller, more brooding style than the estate’s flagship Shiraz, but still unmistakably Hunter.

Made to age, but approachable now with a decant, it’s a reliable, smartly built red from one of the country’s most enduring winemaking families. The kind of bottle that holds its own in any cellar line-up, year after year.

96 points
"It is an undeniably ripe expression of the style and will suit those who like their reds intensely flavoured and generous."
- Toni Paterson (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "A blend of 65/35% shiraz/cabernet sauvignon, with the shiraz coming from Tyrrell’s Ashman’s estate and the cabernet from an old vineyard in McLaren Vale. The warm season in both regions produced a highly flavoured, full-bodied Vat 8 brimming with generous, opulent fruit and finishing with a touch of warmth. There's rich blackberry, licorice, dried cherry and clove, with a faint leafiness that adds an element of freshness. It is an undeniably ripe expression of the style and will suit those who like their reds intensely flavoured and generous." - Toni Paterson (Halliday Wine Companion)

The 2024 vintage continues the theme of returning to our historical roots where Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet as a multiregional blend. The Shiraz is sourced from some of the best parcels on the Tyrrell Estate Ashmans, with the Cabernet Sauvignon coming from an old vine super-premium McLaren Vale parcel. The 2024 vintage blend is 65% Shiraz and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon.

After fermentation in stainless steel vats, both parcels were matured separately before blending in November 2024. The blended wine then finished its maturation in French oak barriques until bottling in April 2025.

Deep red with dark purple concentration in colour. Commanding aromatics of cola, olive tapenade and dried herb. Complex with bright red and blue fruits overlayed with olive, dark chocolate, and graphite moreish tannins.

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
