Description

Ribolla Gialla is the most hallowed of grapes in the Friuli region and here, under the careful guiding hands of Sasa Radikon, it produces the most intense and complex of the Blue Label Radikon wines.

It's deeply coloured, with a golden/red-ish hue, and is right at the borderline of the most extreme examples of skin contact wines on the planet.

It's only four months on skins for this wine, however, the continual hand plunging done in the cellar sees a serious amount of extraction of both colour and tannin occur over that time.

Close your eyes and it's more akin to a red wine in structure and weight.

A curiosity and not recommended for those unfamiliar with skin-macerated white wines. Only small amount available in Australia and sure to fly quickly.

93 points - "Wickedly fresh, the 2019 Ribolla wafts up with a perfumed blend of young peaches, dried flowers and wet stone. It’s silky smooth yet full of mineral tension. A salty flourish gives way to masses of tart orchard fruits and a staining of liquid florals. This tapers off classically dry with a citrusy concentration that puckers the cheeks and forces the mouth to water. This is an especially gastronomic Ribolla that’s already showing beautifully yet should show even better after a few years of cellaring. Drink 2025-2031." - Eric Guido (Vinous)

Radikon

The Radikon family's vineyard holdings cover some 18 hectares of steep slopes in and around Oslavia, near the Slovenia/Italy border. Since 1980, Stanislao (Stanko) Radikon has made the wines alongside his wife Suzana. Their son, Sasa, has taken up the reins and is now the vocal frontman for the family business.

These wines are the benchmark for an unwavering commitment to the natural wine movement. The famous amber wines are made with extremely long skin maceration, years of time in barrel and a long rest in bottle before release. This process reveals wines that are deeply golden in colour, firmly structured, wild and of a singular character.

Radikon is not for the faint of heart. If you are a skin contact new-comer, the wines can be challenging at first. However, if you are an aficionado the style, these are some of the rarest and most sought-after creations in this genre that can be found anywhere in the world.
