2016 Maretti Barolo

Piemonte, Italy

The cheap and cheerful Piemonte wines from Maretti have offered insane value for years. Here's their first legitimate Barolo. A great vintage and exceptional value in the context of the region.

About The Wine

Produced by the winemaker behind the famed wines of Mirafiore and Fontanafredda, the Maretti label has signified exceptional value from Piemonte since it was first imported to Australia.

In 2016, the conditions were next to perfect for growing Nebbiolo acrss the region. Maretti took full advantage producing their first Barolo from Castiglione Falletto. Unsurprisingly, given this producer's track record for over delivering and under charging, the Barolo comes in at a very modest price when compared to the rest of the region.

It's classically styled, too. A sea of red fruit, licorice, orange peel and fine, dusty tannin that will continue to evolve in bottle for the next decade plus.

From The Producer

Winemaking: The fermentation is traditional (15 days) in stainless steel vats with a floating cap at a controlled temperature (30-31° C). The must then stays in contact with the skins for a further 15 days to optimize the extraction of the polyphenolic substances and help start malolactic fermentation. One year in barriques from Allier and two year in oak casks still from Allier (2000 lt). After a soft clarification, the wine is bottled for a further period of maturation in the bottle, the length depends from the characteristics of the vintages, but never less than 12 months.

Blend : Nebbiolo (100%)
ABV : 13.50%
Closure : Screw cap
Drink Until : 2028
Bottle Size : 750ml

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"The colour is dark garnet with ruby highlights. It has a clear-cut, intense nose with overtones of roses, spices, earthy undertones with nuanced vanilla notes. The taste is dry, but soft, full-bodied, velvety and well balanced, and is very long-lasting. Classic Barolo like this works well with rich braised meat dishes or a mushroom risotto." - Maretti

The Wine Front

"Traditional style, more or less, rich in dark cherry, with sage, mint, and new leather, and some aniseed and cocoa. Full-bodied, slightly meaty and rustic, but in a good way, ripe suede-like tannin, earthy, freshness with power, and a mesh of dry tannin and dried herb laced dark fruit on a finish of solid length. It’s already quite approachable, but should do well over the medium term. Value is excellent." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Yum

This was a great wine for a great price. All the Barolo goodness, just not the Barolo price.

Value for money Barolo

Very good value compared with other Barolo's. Doesnt match the higher priced offerings for quality, but out paces the majority of Langhe neb at a similar price point. Dark chocolate on back palette and fine grippy tannins.

Value for Money

A good value for money purchase.

Lean, clean. An unexpected (slight) peppery finish on the palate.

Great Value Barolo

Wasn’t sure what to expect with this Barolo at the low price point for this type of wine but really surprised with the quality. Will definitely order again.

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.

FaQs

Do I have to order in dozens? No, please mix it up! You can order wines in any quantity and variation you like. You can order 1 bottle or 50. We challenge you to make the ultimate mixed pack of wine!

Are there volume discounts? No, our pricing is designed to be the best in market already - no marking up and then discounting down! For very large orders (weddings, etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call.

Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll consider matching it. We'll even retrospectively issue you store credit if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.

Can coupons and discounts be stacked? No, only one discount or coupon can be applied to an order at once.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 1300 668 385 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Does Different Drop have a physical store? No. Just an a warehouse/office. We occasionally do events however, so sign up to our newsletter or follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.

Can I special order a wine you do not sell? If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
