About The Pack

Varney Wines began with just a "tonne for fun" for Alan Varney to play around with over a decade ago.

He took his years of experience working at top South Australian wineries, including time spent at Orlando Wines, Longview Vineyard and over a decade as senior winemaker at d’Arenberg, and poured his skills into crafting a style of wine that he and his friends and family could enjoy.

This pack feature five wines that will give you an introduction into Alan's world of wine. It covers everything from fresh white and rose to great McLaren Vale reds. Each has great reviews and offers excellent value for money.

It's the perfect way to get to know James Halliday's Best New Winery for 2021.

2017 Varney Wines Shiraz

Classic South Australian Shiraz from the new kid on the block (well, sort of).

This comes from vineyards in both the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. Alan Varney has great long-standing relationships with some of the SA's top growers and he takes full advantage to turn out the best value wines he can.

James Halliday dubbed this a wine with "mouthwatering texture".

The Shiraz is soft and plummy, with a sweet mid-palate and a high-toned aromatic lift from the fruit grown in the cooler parts of the Hills.

2018 Varney Wines Entrada GMT

Alan Varney has spent time making wine in Portugal. He draws on those experiences to craft this top value range of Entrada wines.

He descibes this as "a fresh, approachable red blend styled on the very drinkable red wines of Portugal and Spain."

It takes Grenache in all its rosy, cherry-filled glory and meshes it to savoury Mataro and the exotically perfumed Portuguese variety, Touriga Nacional.

It's a lip-smacking, medium bodied red wine perfectly suited to all occasions. For 95 point mid-week red at this price, it's hard to beat.

This is a top effort from the Halliday Best New Winery. It's light, fruity yet has yterrific acidty which makes it perfect for matching with seafood and warm spring days.

2019 Varney Wines Chardonnay

A cool, classy example of Adelaide Hills Chardonnay here from Alan Varney.

This is just the way you should treat cool climate Chardonnay. It's fermented with wild yeast, stirred regularly in barrel, and kept in a trim, elegant frame.

These wines from Varney are incredibly stylish for the price. Fresh, modern, easily approachable yet imbued with enough complexity to keep you coming back for more. This Chardonnay is no exception.

Lovely stuff for those who enjoy finer, more slip-stream versions of Chardonnay.

2018 Varney Wines Semillon Fiano

This is a great value little seafood wine that blends two varieties to make something greater than the sum of its parts.

Fiano is finding a happy home in Langhorne Creek, picking up great texture and palate weight through the winemaking process. The portion of Adelaide Hills Semillon freshens the whole thing up and adds some zip and crunch to the wine.

It's super fresh and gently textural, the perfect wine to kick back with beachside.
