2019 Tyrrell's Belford Semillon

The Belford vineyard sits at the northern tip of Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley holdings and is always one of our favourites in the single vineyard series. It’s one of the most distinctive sites in the Valley. The vineyard sits furthest from the Brokenback Range, meaning warmer days and a slightly riper fruit profile - Semillon here tends to show a touch more weight and texture than its southern siblings.

The 2019 vintage followed another outstanding year, continuing a run of warm, dry seasons that produced pristine, small-berried fruit. Handpicked and lightly pressed, the juice fermented cool in stainless steel before resting on fine lees for six weeks. The resulting wine is classic Belford: ripe citrus and stone fruit aromas, a dense, almost honeyed palate and that hallmark phenolic texture that gives the wine extra depth and drive.

We love this wine for how it captures both the generosity of the site and the finesse of Tyrrell’s touch. It’s Semillon with substance - bright and powerful now, but built to age gracefully for decades. A living piece of Hunter Valley history that continues to overdeliver every single vintage.

"This wine displays the hallmark intensity of this unique site... It opens beautifully with time in the glass, finishing clean, lemony and long."

2019 Tyrrell's HVD Semillon

The HVD vineyard has always been a cornerstone of Tyrrell’s history. Planted in 1908 on the old Hunter Valley Distillery site, the vines sit between two dry creek beds on deep, sandy soils that drain freely, producing Semillon with both power and grace. It’s one of the most prized old-vine blocks in the Valley and a constant reminder of why this region remains the spiritual home of the variety.

The 2019 vintage followed the superb 2018, another warm and dry year that delivered fruit in immaculate condition. Yields were low but the concentration was exceptional. Hand-picked, gently pressed and fermented cool in stainless steel, this wine spent six weeks on fine lees before bottling. The result is a Semillon of shimmering intensity: lemon sherbet and white florals on the nose, tightly wound citrus on the palate and that hallmark HVD softness through the finish.

It’s this combination of purity, texture and subtle richness that sets HVD apart — a wine that drinks beautifully young but will reward cellaring for decades. A true Hunter Valley classic, made with the quiet confidence of 160 years’ experience in the Tyrrell family’s hands.

"Mouth-watering crunch without the pain, you might say. All just so. A highlight from the 2019 release."

2019 Tyrrell's Stevens Semillon

The Stevens vineyard fruit has been made by the Tyrrell family since the 1993 vintage.

The vineyard sits on Marrowbone Road in Pokolbin - the family’s southernmost Semillon site - with vines dating back to 1911. It was this patch of red and sandy loam that inspired Bruce Tyrrell to launch the Single Vineyard program in the early 1990s, a move that changed the course of the winery’s history.

Hand-picked in the cool of late January 2019, the fruit was lightly pressed and fermented in stainless steel, made in the same pared-back style as Vat 1. What you get is classic Hunter Semillon DNA with a touch of vintage warmth: lemon pith, grilled citrus, and a fine thread of chalky minerality. The 2019 shows a little more weight and generosity than usual, but the acid line and precision remain spot on.

Stevens has always been a wine of balance - racy in youth, but built to evolve in the cellar for decades. It’s one of the Hunter’s great expressions of place and, vintage after vintage, still one of Australia’s best-value fine wines.

"This is a complex and chameleonic wine... The palate offers enviable harmony, with no edgy acidity, allowing the flavours to flow seamlessly."
- Toni Paterson MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.
