Swinney isn’t your average vineyard. It’s a family-run setup on a massive old grazing property in Frankland River, way out in Western Australia’s Great Southern. The Swinney family – Graham, Kaye, and their kids Matt and Janelle – have been on this land since the 1920s. By the ‘90s, they figured it was time to mix things up, swapping some of the sheep for vines. Today, about 160 hectares are under vine, including the now-famous Powderbark Ridge, first planted back in ’98 with the help of winemaker Peter Dawson.
These days, much of their fruit still goes to other top producers, but the best parcels stay home and end up in the hands of Rob Mann – yep, from that Mann family. He’s been crafting some seriously good wines here, showing just how well this bit of country suits Grenache, Mourvèdre, Shiraz and Riesling.
The reds are full of character – dark, savoury and laced with that ironstone edge that marks this landscape. There’s power, sure, but also balance and real precision. This three-pack is a great way to see what all the fuss is about.
The Swinney family have been farming this bit of Frankland River for over 100 years, and it shows in the way they handle their vines. The Grenache comes off low-yielding bush vines on the ironstone slopes of the Wilson’s Pool vineyard – tough country that naturally keeps the fruit small, concentrated and full of character.
Each vine is picked in stages so only the best fruit makes it in. About 40% of the bunches go in whole, with wild ferments ticking away in small wooden and stainless vats. The wine then spends close to a year on lees in large old French oak before bottling, unfined and barely filtered.
It’s fragrant and bright, with red berries, spice and that unmistakable ironstone note from the soil. Medium-bodied, fresh and layered, it’s got the balance and precision that winemaker Rob Mann has made his calling card. One of those wines that feels effortless but clearly isn’t.

The Swinney family have been farming out here in Frankland River for generations, and they know their land inside out. The Syrah comes from the Wilson’s Pool and Powderbark vineyards – dry-grown vines on rocky ironstone soils that naturally keep yields low and flavours tight. A mix of old massale selections and newer clones adds a bit of depth and complexity to the blend.
The fruit is hand-picked, sorted by hand, and gravity-fed into small fermenters. About a third of the bunches go in whole, all wild-fermented, then left on skins for around 12 days before being pressed to large, mostly old French oak for 11 months of ageing.
It’s a Syrah that feels alive – dark fruit, spice, a touch of olive and that earthy, ferrous note that seems to come from the ground itself. Medium-bodied, firm and savoury, it’s beautifully put together but still feels natural and unforced.

The Swinney family have been working their Frankland River property for more than a century, and Mourvèdre has become one of their quiet triumphs. The vines are dry-grown in ironstone and gravelly soils, naturally low-yielding and perfectly suited to the variety’s tough, late-ripening nature.
The 2024 season was warm and dry, but careful canopy work and timing kept the balance just right. The fruit was hand-picked, destemmed and sorted by hand before a wild ferment with about 18% whole bunches. It spent just under two weeks on skins, then matured for 11 months in large, seasoned French oak before bottling – unfined and barely filtered.
The wine is deeply coloured and aromatic, showing dark fruit, spice and a gentle earthy edge. Medium-bodied with firm, powdery tannins and plenty of length, it’s both savoury and fresh – a fine example of this enigmatic grape.
