2024 Sailor Seeks Horse Pinot Noir

We’ve followed Paul and Gilli Lipscombe's wines since the early days, and while their Huon Valley Pinot is always a highlight of the Tassie calendar, the 2024 vintage is a particularly gripping release. It was a proper "stressful" year in the south - warm and exceptionally dry - which pushed yields down to a tiny two tonnes per hectare. That struggle has translated into a wine with serious presence and a deeper, more structural "vibe" than the ethereal 2023.

In the glass, it’s plush but carries a distinctive sappy, autumnal edge. Think dark cherry and high-toned spice rather than just simple primary fruit. Tasting with Pul, he was surprised how plush this vintage is on release, and we both agreed it will be very popular with long time fans of this label.

There’s a weight and "chalkiness" to the tannin here that feels very well settled and sure of itself. It’s a concentrated Pinot that proves why Sailor Seeks Horse remains at the absolute top of the tree for detailed, site-driven Tasmanian wine.

2024 Sailor Seeks Horse Chardonnay

We’ve been huge fans of Paul and Gilli's Chardonnay over the years. More Chardonnay in the Huon Valley, we say! Tthe 2024 vintage is a slight departure from the lean, bracing styles of the past. It was a proper low-yield year in the south, with the growing season exceptionally dry and warm which saw yields drop to a tiny 2.5 tonnes per hectare. That concentration is felt immediately.

It's one of the more generous SSH Chardonnays we've seen on release. Think custard apple and white stone fruit, with a savoury, floral lift and just a hint of parmesan rind. More chalky than saline as previous years. Delicious but a different kind of delicious for those who have followed the label.

What really stands out is the texture. There's a distinct "chalkiness" and a weight to the wine that Paul reckons comes from those ultra-low yields. It’s a powerful, detailed Chardonnay that feels incredibly settled and safe. If you've loved the precision of previous years, this 2024 adds a layer of plushness and drive that makes it one of their most compelling releases yet.

Just 12 bottles available and only available in this pack.

"Now here is a wine that smells distinctly like it is comfortable in its own skin and it hasn't been mucked with. There's an inflow of lemon curd with fruit tones of white peach, nectarine and grapefruit. Hints of crushed stone, almond meal, crème fraîche, clover blossom, cashew butter, a distant tendril of struck flint and subtle nutty oak. Finely balanced; it's all detail and tension with light textural pithiness, fine, sapid acidity and a taut and sleek palate shape that travels long and true."

2024 Sailor Seeks Horse Small Wonder Tamar Valley Pinot Noir

Gilli and Paul Lipscombe have settled into a nice rhythm with their Small Wonder wines, and the 2024 Tamar Valley Pinot Noir shows just how well the region suits their touch. It’s a fuller, more generous release than the last few years, with the warmer season pushing the fruit into that red and blue spectrum while still keeping the wine firmly in the savoury, detailed zone they like to work in.

The Pommard clone brings its usual depth, and the extended time in barrel has added a gentle gamey note that sits comfortably behind the fruit rather than taking charge. The palate is where the vintage really shows super supple, fleshy in the middle, and carried by tannins that feel soft but present enough to guide the wine.

It’s a really assured take on Tamar Pinot from a team better known for the tension and structure of their Huon wines. As ever with these guys, production is small, so it won’t stick around for long.

2024 Sailor Seeks Horse Small Wonder Tamar Valley Chardonnay

Paul and Gilli Lipscombe’s 2024 Small Wonder Tamar Valley Chardonnay continues their move north from the Huon, tapping into the Tamar’s slightly warmer, more generous profile while still holding onto that clean, finely cut style they’re known for. It’s a natural follow on from the last couple of vintages, just with a bit more ripeness and mid palate weight thanks to the friendlier season.

The fruit came off in great condition, and the wine shows it straight away. There’s a lovely mix of white flowers and gentle stone fruits here, sitting alongside a savoury note that’s come from the longer stretch in barrel. The palate feels more open and supple than the previous release, fleshy without tipping into richness, and carried by a line of acidity that keeps everything focused.

It’s a really smart expression of Tamar Chardonnay from a producer who’s still exploring what this site can do. As always, volumes are tiny, so it won’t be around long.

Sailor Seeks Horse

Sailor Seeks Horse is one of the Apple Isle's most exciting new producers. It's a husband and wife team behind the scenes, Paul and Gilli Lipscombe.

The Lipscombes produce exquisite Pinot Noir and Chardonnay off their estate vineyard, planted by their own hands, back in 2005. The wines have startling energy to them, with a pinpoint balance of fruit and savoury spice. They are released in perilously small amounts and are never around for long.

With the small cult following the couple have garnered since starting their own label, their wines are now hunted by serious collectors who want to be in on the ground floor.

As Mike Bennie declared with Paul and Gilli's inaugural 2013 Pinot Noir release, "We have here a new star in the making." Tasmanian Pinot and Chardonnay lovers, don't miss these scintillating wines.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
