About The Pack
McLaren Vale has become ground zero for bargain Australian Grenache over the last decade.
In fact, we'd argue there's no better $25ish red wine on the planet than a well made McLaren Vale Grenache (or Grenache blend) from a small producer - and here's the pack that proves it!
This is a selection of some of our favourites at the moment. Some of these wines are made in painfully small quantities so stocks may disappear quickly. Grab you for yourself while you can.
2021 Aphelion The Confluence Grenache
"Juicy red fruits, but firm and gently earthy... Lovely. All just so."
Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Crafting McLaren Vale Grenache is the main game for Rob Mack and Louise Rhodes at Aphelion. It's a game they are very skilled at. Every egg a bird, as they say.
Sourced predominantly from a single vineyard in the Blewitt Springs subregion, this fresh and vital version of Grenache is set decidedly to a "Drink-Me-Now" tempo.
It's the composite blend of the three Aphelion Grenaches, combining both the 100% whole berry and 100% whole bunch wines into one seamless wine.

"Excellent Grenache. Invigorating."
Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
The crew at Thistledown are Grenache-obsessed - they know how fantastic the McLaren Vale region is at producing stellar Grenache, and they sure love to show it off.
This is one old vine Grenache to really sink your teeth into. The fruit comes from multiple vineyards, each parcel vinified separately with around 30% whole bunches. It all comes together in a spectacular package, keeping the pureness of the fruit but with layers and layers of interest and finesse.
Such an excellent wine for the price point. The perfect way to dip a toe into the wonderful world of McLaren Vale Grenache without breaking the bank.

"...the same magic as young, high-quality pinot noir. Truly delectable."
James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)
How good is McLaren Vale Grenache?! These bright, gorgeous, ethereal reds - from the Blewitt Springs sub-region in particular - are just so perfect for growing and drinking under our Aussie sun.
This is Grenache 101 from Main & Cherry. Picked early to retain freshness and purity, this just bounces out of the glass with waves of red fruits and a nice lick of tannin.
Super drinking and super value.

A combination of Clare and McLaren Vale Grenache for the last time - the Tonic will be all McLaren from 2021.
Another glorious, light-footed Grenache release from Glenn Barry - the fruit is picked early precisely to maintain the beguiling floral aromatics that so represent modern Grenache.
This is man-handled as little as possible on its way to bottle. A small amount of whole bunch in the ferment, only a gentle racking before bottling with a dash of sulphur. What you get is the very essence of SA Grenache; brightly fruited, impossibly drinkable and more-ish to the last glass.
If you've never tried the tantalising wines styles from Tonic, or never had a modern style of Grenache that has blown your socks off, there is no better way you could spend under $40 on a bottle of wine.

"This trio has come together well to create a savoury, buoyant style."
Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)
The S.C. Pannell GST is one of the most successful of his range, with Steve himself calling it the Swiss army wine.
In many ways, this wine typifies Steve's philosophy on Australian red wines. The GST is about freshness and balance, a red wine that puts drinkability and versatility front and centre. All three components of the blend working in harmony.
Australian red wine doesn't get more gluggable than this. Fans of this wine in the past should buy with supreme confidence - it goes with anything, from food to a good time.

"So fresh, so well balanced, so modern and indeed so thoughtful."
Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
McLaren Vale 'GSM' blends work so very well, and this wine from the good people at Jericho is a contemporary, joyous celebration of the style.
The Grenache fruit comes from two mature vineyards, one 85 years old and one 40 years old in the Blewitt Springs area - a sub-region that is home to many of the Vale's finest and most perfumed Grenache.
Owner and winemaker Neil Jericho explained to us that while the Shiraz and Mataro components definitely add something to this wine, the hero is Grenache. Juicy, jubey, delicious Grenache!
This has been one of the great go-to GSMs from this region for a few years now and this vintage certainly doesn't miss a beat.
