Get to know the magnificent wines from Hamish Young at Mada Wines through this excellent value mixed pack filled with two reds, a rose, his excellent Chardonnay and delightfully textural Pinot Gris.
Poachers is Hamish Young’s top Shiraz – and the 2024 is a belter.
The fruit comes off Poachers Vineyard near Murrumbateman, a higher, cooler site that gives Shiraz both power and precision. It’s the fuller of his two Shiraz releases, but still made in that unmistakably Hamish way – thoughtful, restrained and quietly confident.
2024 was a steady, even season, and the fruit came in spot-on. Fermented wild, gently worked, and aged in old oak, it’s a wine built around texture and balance rather than muscle.
There’s plenty going on – dark berries, pepper, a bit of cured meat and that savoury Canberra edge. It’s structured but fresh, with just enough weight to feel serious without losing that drink-now appeal.
Classically elegant and drinkable Mada, and some of the best value on the region.
Mountain View is Hamish Young’s top white, sourced from a high, windswept vineyard in Tumbarumba – one of the coolest and most exciting Chardonnay regions in the country. The site’s altitude and granite soils give him fruit with serious line and purity, and in 2024, everything came together beautifully.
Hamish keeps the winemaking simple: whole-bunch press, wild ferment, and ageing on lees in mostly old French oak. No tricks, no heavy oak, just patience and detail to let the vineyard shine.
It’s tight and energetic, with citrus, white peach and a hint of struck match. There’s texture from the lees, a touch of grip, and a clean, stony finish that feels straight out of the mountains. It’s elegant but not shy – proper Tumbarumba Chardonnay with that unmistakable Mada touch.
The 2024 Syrah blends fruit from Hilltops and Canberra – two regions that balance each other out beautifully. Most of the fruit comes from a warm slope at Freemans Vineyard in Prunevale, bringing plush berries and a smooth, generous core. A smaller portion from Poachers Vineyard in Murrumbateman adds spice, lift and a touch of savoury detail.
Hamish keeps the winemaking pared back as always – gentle fermentation, maturation split between ceramic and old French oak. The idea is to capture brightness and shape without losing that natural flow he’s known for.
It’s vibrant and aromatic, showing red and blue fruit, pepper and subtle herbs. The palate is silky and open, fresh through the finish but with enough depth to hold your attention. A beautiful balance of ripeness and restraint, and just way to easy to drink!

The 2025 Pinot Gris shows Hamish Young doing what he does best – taking a familiar variety and giving it focus and texture. Fruit comes from two cool sites: one near Young in NSW and the other in Gundaroo in the Canberra District. The mix of granite, clay loam and shale soils gives both freshness and weight, which Hamish balances beautifully.
Moderate pressings were included this year to add grip and a gentle savoury edge, with fermentation split between stainless steel (50%), old French oak (42%) and a small portion of whole berries (8%) for extra depth. The result is structured and quietly layered rather than soft or sweet.
It’s all fresh pear, spiced apple and a twist of mandarin peel. The palate feels bright and clean but textured through the middle, finishing dry and mouthwatering. It’s crisp, food-friendly and just that bit more interesting than most Aussie Gris.
