2024 Cobaw Ridge Lagrein

Cobaw Ridge is a true original. Alan and Nelly Cooper planted their vines in the late ’80s on a granite slope high in the Macedon Ranges, farming organically and biodynamically long before it was fashionable. Over the years they’ve built one of Australia’s most respected small estates – and no wine sums that up better than their Lagrein.

Originally from northern Italy, Lagrein is still a rarity in Australia, but Cobaw Ridge have made it their own. Decades of experience have turned this into the country’s benchmark for the variety – deep in colour, structured, but always with that cool-climate freshness that defines the site.

The 2024 shows dark berry fruit, spice and earthy grip, with firm but polished tannins and a long, savoury finish. It’s serious wine, no doubt, but still very much made to drink.

Extremely limited.

"Utterly superb. Could be a contender for Australian red wine of the year for me. Believe it."

2024 Cobaw Ridge Syrah

Cobaw Ridge has been doing its own thing in the Macedon Ranges since the late ’80s, long before the region got the recognition it has today. Alan and Nelly Cooper were early adopters of organics and biodynamics, and their hands-on approach hasn’t changed much since – small vineyard, no chemicals, and a very deliberate focus on letting the site do the talking.

Their Syrah comes off granite soils high up in the Cobaw Ranges, one of the coolest spots in the region. The fruit is hand-picked, fermented with wild yeasts, and aged in large, old oak to keep it clean and savoury. The result is a wine with real presence but no heaviness – dark fruit, spice and a firm, stony edge that speaks of altitude and restraint.

It’s a proper cool-climate Australian Syrah – detailed, structured and made with care rather than fuss.

2024 Cobaw Ridge High Density Pinot Noir

Alan and Nelly Cooper have spent more than three decades proving just how special their little granite hillside in the Macedon Ranges really is. Everything at Cobaw Ridge is done by hand and with intent – certified biodynamic farming, no irrigation, no shortcuts. The High Density Pinot Noir comes from a small block planted close together to push the vines deep and naturally limit yields.

The 2024 vintage shows just how well that approach works. It’s pure and concentrated without being heavy, the kind of wine that feels grown rather than made. There’s dark cherry, sappy herbs and a hint of spice from the stems, all sitting on a fine, stony backbone. Fermented with wild yeast and aged in mostly old oak, it’s bottled with minimal handling.

This is serious Macedon Pinot – detailed, savoury and full of life, with the quiet confidence of a grower who knows their patch inside out.

2024 Cobaw Ridge Original Block Pinot Noir

The range of wines from Cobaw Ridge in the Macedon Ranges is now ridiculously good, and their slender, cool-climate Pinot Noir is further testament to that.

It is slender in feel, but textured and incredibly complex with a lovely balance between perky red fruits and classic autumnal undergrowthy savouriness. Drink or cellar, it's a no-lose situation.

Father and son, Alan and Josh Cooper, are climbing the steps to the podium of iconic Australian wine producers but would probably be embarrassed to wave from the top. But they should.

"This is a curious but compelling, really enjoyable wine, but it sure sits outside the box. Yes... Tastes also like a wet orchard, flower patch and adjacent veggie garden. Really refreshing. Plenty to see in each sip. This is very good in its way. Nourishing and super drinkable. Love it."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Cobaw Ridge

Alan and Nelly Cooper established their Macedon Ranges vineyard in 1985. The first certified organic and biodynamic winery in the region, the Coopers firmly believe that great wines are made in the vineyard so the vines and the integrity of their fruit are their first priorities.

They grow some of the region’s best examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Australia’s most sought-after example of Lagrein. Over the years Alan's winemaking approach has become more and more minimalist. With sulphur now the only addition in the winery and Alan using more inert vessels such as Qvevri, the Cobaw Ridge Wines have never looked better.

Small, family-owned, sensitively-grown, hand-crafted wines - this is why we love Australian wine.
