Description

Te Mata Estate is best known for Coleraine and Awatea, but the Buck family's Hawke's Bay Gamay is one of the smartest buys in their range. They introduced this superior selection of Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc to New Zealand back in 1995, and Phil Brodie's team now picks it from a single site, the Woodthorpe Terraces vineyard.

The 2026 was harvested between 12 and 20 March, and this year a hefty 85% of the fruit went through 'maceration carbonique', the classic Beaujolais technique. That's well up on last year, and you can smell it. The other 15% got a traditional warm ferment for a bit of grip, then the lot had just seven weeks in seasoned French oak before bottling.

It's a brighter, more delicate-looking wine than the 2025, pale ruby with a pinkish tinge, but don't be fooled. Red cherry, raspberry and strawberry jump out with a lick of violets and Turkish delight, then crunchy fruit, juicy acidity and barely-there tannins carry it to a fresh, dry finish. Chill it a little and pour it with a charcuterie board, a roast chicken or a bowl of pasta. Drink it young, while that crunchy fruit is at its best - it's built for the next couple of years, not the cellar.

Tasting Note
Brilliant ruby with a pink, rose-tea hue, Gamay Noir '26 has a translucent brightness that is deceptive in its delicacy. The wine immediately opens with a lifted, intense, red cherry, raspberry and strawberry core, edged with a violet perfume. Turkish delight and a faint thread of sandalwood and star anise drifts in and out of the ripe, sumptuous palate. Striking, vivid and immediate, the crunchy red fruit and cool, mouth-watering acidity is carried by a supple, silky frame with the lightest dusting of fine tannins. Immediately delicious, Gamay Noir '26 finishes long, fresh, and quietly irresistible - leaving a trace of red berries, spice, and a lingering signature line of dry, clean, bright fruit.

Vineyards
Estate Gamay Noir '26 is a single vineyard wine from Te Mata Estate's Woodthorpe Terraces vineyard, harvested from 12 to 20 March 2026.

Winemaking
The unique 'maceration carbonique' fermentation, which enhances the fruit and floral aromas of the wine, was used for 85% of the grapes. The other 15% received a traditional, warm, red wine fermentation. The resulting wines completed their malolactic fermentation and were matured for seven weeks in seasoned French oak barrels, before blending, fining and bottling.

Cellaring Potential
Estate Gamay Noir '26 can be enjoyed immediately upon release and can be served at room temperature or, during summer, lightly chilled. It will continue to develop in bottle for two years from harvest.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
