Description

Bill Downie is a Pinot Noir obsessive. He’s spent years working everywhere from Burgundy to Bass Phillip, but he eventually went all-in on Gippsland because he reckons it’s one of few places in Australia that can produce world-class Pinot.

The 2025 Gippsland Pinot captures the region's darker, more brooding side. It’s a blend of his two mainstay sites: the red volcanic soils of the Matthews vineyard and the high-density plantings at Guendulain Farm. Bill was ruthless with his site selection this year, deciding to scrap his Bull Swamp and Mornington bottlings entirely because he didn't feel they accurately reflected his standards for the season.

It’s darker and more concentrated than previous years, led by black cherry fruit. But it’s the savoury detail that makes it a Downie wine - think cardamom, rose petals, and a mineral edge through the finish. It’s got a lot of presence in the mouth with noticeable tannin, so while it has plenty of fruit to enjoy now, it’s the kind of wine that will really find its stride with a few years in the cellar. It’s an honest, sophisticated Pinot from a maker at the top of his game.

"Bold perfume, quite a bit of flavour too, fine, grainy tannin landing well. Licks of saline minerality, some salted liquorice characters lending x-factor and a dose of sour cherry through the finish... Serious pinot."

94 points - "Sweeping, squeaky texture, darker fruit spectrum, seamless integration of white mushroom, undergrowth and brambly herbal inflection. Bold perfume, quite a bit of flavour too, fine, grainy tannin landing well. Licks of saline minerality, some salted liquorice characters lending x-factor and a dose of sour cherry through the finish. Quite strict in a way, needing some tuime to unfurl. Serious pinot." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

    Interesting Pinot

Good ripe vintage, but still in the slightly leaner style with herbal undertones, good potential to cellar a few years.

2025 Gippsland
2025 Gippsland - A blend of fruit from the Matthews vineyard in Berrys Creek and Guendulain Farm in Yarragon again this year.

Matthews was planted to MV6 on red volcanic soil in 1998 and has always been dry grown. It is a cool, damp site and the vines grow dense, lush canopies. The vines at Guendulain were planted in Baw Baw Shire in 2008 at 10,000 vines per hectare, half MV6 and half Pommard clone.

The 2025 wine is quite deep in colour with a bright red edge. The nose shows aromas of cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant as well as cardamom, rose petals and violets. The palate tastes of more berry fruits, rusted iron and a subtle, briny, kelp- like edge. It is textured and round with noticeable tannin and very good length. A wine to drink now but will certainly keep for many year to come.
