Bill Downie doesn't really do things by halves. He’s spent his career obsessed with Gippsland, bent on proving that this corner of Victoria can produce Pinot that genuinely rivals the best in the world. He’s all about the site, and Camp Hill is essentially the crown jewel of his patch.
It’s a unique spot, sitting at the highest point of the local ranges on rocky, red volcanic soil. Usually, this altitude gives the wine a real daintiness, but the 2025 season was a bit different. An incredibly early harvest meant the fruit hit a level of power and concentration we haven't seen from this vineyard before. It’s traded in that typical light-footedness for something much more muscular and dark.
The 2025 is noticeably deeper than previous years. You get heaps of dark cherry and wood spice, but then these super floral notes and a twist of orange peel start showing up. It’s rich and pretty intense, but it still has that high-altitude freshness that stops it from feeling heavy.
It's a powerful, beautiful, sophisticated Pinot that’s clearly built to last. While it’s impressive right now, it feels like the kind of wine that will really hit its stride if you can leave it alone in the cellar for five or so years.

"Tightly strung on sinewy, silty tannins and all feels quite compact, gossamer textured, and lingering with peppery spice and dried mushroom characters. A very proper wine."
