Description

This is what happens when Australia's best value Pinot producer gets his hands on some fruit from Tasmania. The red bargain of the year? Well, it's in the conversation, for sure.

Franco D'Anna is well known for his exceptional value Hoddles Creek Pinot Noirs and his bargains from the Yarra Valley, Yea Valley and Gippsland under the Wickhams Road label, but what we didn't know is that he's also been toying with the idea of hunting down some fruit from Tasmania for a while. In 2025, he got his hands on a small parcel from the Tamar Valley, just to dip his toe.

It's darker than its Victorian counterparts, though still red fruited, with more tannin than you might expect at the price and a strong regional thumbprint of the Tamar Valley. It's proper Tassie Pinot, with Franco's easy drinkability.

We only got a small swing at Franco's first crack at the Tamar. We hope it won't be his last. But trust us, or trust Franco's track record, this is a steal.

The first Tasmanian pinot released under the Wickhams Road label, and what a good wine and bargain it is! From a vineyard near Launceston, this bright and vivacious wine has aromas of ripe strawberries and some spice, while the palate is sweetly fruited, gently grippy and delicious, even at this early stage. Will be even better in three or four months once it fully hits its straps. Yet another feather in the d'Anna family cap!

Sourced from a vineyard near Launceston. A lobster (should you remember what money looks like) for a good Tassie Pinot!

Red cherry, floral and minty, a little earthy spice and mulchiness. Gentle cherry and red fruit, a good amount of tannin, a softness to acidity, juicy with a finish of solid slightly sappy length and a twist of orange peel. A bit of graphite in the mix. Here’s a tasty little wine. Give it another six months to settle, though admittedly it’s pretty good now.

    Super Value Cool Climate Pinot

Couldn't rate this highly enough for the money

Fragrant and juicy yet with some decent weight and length this isn't a lolly simple pinot as its got some style and texture to it

Paid $5 more a bottle than off the DD site

So it was a No-Brainer to pick up a case at this price!

    Wickhams Pinot Noir

A great-value Pinot Noir. Typical Tassie one with good body and taste. Normally a similar quality one would easily cost over $30.

Sourced from a vineyard near Launceston. Fermented on skins for 14 days, pressed to old French barriques for maturation. Bottled unfiltered and unfined.
