Description

Tarrango is a grape with a weird and wonderful history. It was actually designed by CSIRO scientists in 1972 specifically for the scorching heat of inland Australia. By crossing noble Portuguese Touriga with humble Sultana, they created a variety that retains "champagne-level" acidity even when it hits 38°C in the shade. Laura and Brendan Carter have rescued this forgotten science project from the Swan Hill region, turning it into the ultimate "beach cricket" red.

The fruit comes from ancient sandy limestone soils and is handled with a light touch to keep the vibe breezy. It’s picked early and bottled fresh (at just 11.5% alcohol) to preserve its primary, zingy energy. This isn't a wine meant for a dusty cellar; it’s a wine built for an ice bucket and a hot afternoon.

In the glass, it delivers a massive hit of sour cherry, watermelon, and pink grapefruit. It’s impossibly light on its feet with a citrus zing that makes it dangerously easy to drink. Another fascinating, thought-provoking wine from Unico Zelo and as always, tremendous value for money!

A red wine designed by scientists for the Australian heat! Tarrango delivers sour cherry, watermelon and citrus zing with featherweight freshness. Best served cold – this is what red wine looks like when it's built for our climate.

Australia's purpose-bred grape variety. Designed by CSIRO scientists in 1972 for the scorching heat of inland Australia, Tarrango was built to solve a problem: how do you make fresh, bright wine in a bona fide desert? They crossed noble Portuguese Touriga with humble Sultana and created something that shouldn't work but does. Thriving on minimal water, retaining champagne-level acidity at 38°C, and yielding abundantly where European varieties struggle. Then we forgot about it. Nearly let it disappear entirely. Delicate sips of sour cherry and pink grapefruit, impossibly light on its feet, dangerously easy to drink straight from the fridge. This is what Australian wine could be if we trusted our own science.

Unico Zelo

Unico Zelo is the project of winemaking couple Brendan and Laura Carter. In their words, their aim is to create “Italian-inspired, textural and site-expressive wines” and “Australian examples of Mediterranean varieties in an approachable and jovial fashion.”

Since bursting onto the scene in 2014 with their eye-catching, outrageously good value alternative vino, the Carters have spread their wings and their range. They now make a large suite of wines, including single vineyard examples of Fiano, Nero d'Avola and Nebbiolo. They are one of the most dynamic winemaking duos in the Adelaide Hills.
