Description

This is a brand new debut release from Timo, and we loved it when we tasted the lineup with him this year. With his main lineup of reds becoming so fiercely allocated, this Pinot Syrah blend is a brilliant, more accessible entry point into his range. It's the perfect way to get a feel for the Mayer style without breaking the bank.

It’s a 75/25 split, combining Pinot from his home farm with Syrah sourced out of Gembrook. Timo went with a 50/50 mix of whole-bunch and destemmed fruit, resulting in a dark, highly perfumed wine where the Syrah really drives the nose.

On the palate, the fruit is pretty and a little candied right now, a little plusher than the Pinots but still light on its feet. It gives off a faint northern Italian vibe, finishing with a nice hit of spice and violet. Do yourself a favour and serve this with a slight chill.

"First release ever. And priced for access to Mayer magic... A delicate, cherry-leading red of rose hip tea, alpine herbs, juiciness, a lick of graphite-shaped tannins. Bistro friendly, chill ready, crisp red fruited feel. Sweetness peaks through but the herb and spice mix does a good job of balance. Light weight and yet a sense of some concentration. A fine, lengthy finish. Yummo."

93 points - "First release ever. And priced for access to Mayer magic. “Cost of living crisis”, yells Timo, “a barrel of Mayer, two barrels of Doctor, one barrel of upper Yarra volcanic Syrah, four hogsheads, half is whole bunch, all delicious, and fuck Hunter”.

A 75/25 blend, with the Syrah sourced from Gembrook in the Upper Yarra. Half whole bunch, half destemmed, and quite dark in colour. Perfumed nose with Syrah leading the aromatics. The fruit feels slightly candied and warm on the palate, suggesting it needs a little time to settle. Best served as a Summer drink on the cooler side. A pretty, perfumed wine with a faint nod to northern Italy, finishing with spice and violet lift.

Timo Mayer

German-born, enigmatic winemaker Timo Mayer is one of the great characters of the Yarra Valley. The words bombastic, charismatic and wild are as much applicable to the man as his wines.

From his close-planted Yarra Valley vineyard, evocatively named 'Bloody Hill', Timo carves out some astounding wines made with low levels of new oak and minimal additions. The signature of Timo's winemaking style is his penchant for whole-bunch ferment. His wines have an ethereal quality, firm tannins and impeccable structure.

These are compelling and extremely limited wines that tell a unique story of the Yarra Valley.
The Bloody Hill range is now the responsibility of Timo's talented son Rivar Mayer Ferguson, and has dropped the Mayer on the label from the 2021 releases. They continue to be superb value wines.
