Description

Few wines define a region like Braemore defines Hunter Semillon. For over two decades, Andrew Thomas has bottled the essence of this Pokolbin vineyard – purity, precision and that unmistakable Hunter energy – and the 2025 release is another standout.

The growing season was about as good as it gets. Dry and steady from budburst through to veraison, the vineyard looked immaculate heading into harvest. A few tense January storms kept things interesting, but the fruit came through clean, balanced and perfectly ripe. After the small 2024 crop, 2025 delivered both quality and quantity. The vineyard was hand-picked over five days starting January 27 – an even, quick, and near-perfect harvest.

In the winery, Thommo stuck to his tried-and-true process: whole-bunch pressing, neutral yeast fermentation, and a short rest on lees to build texture while keeping the focus razor-sharp. The result is classic Braemore – lemon and lime, green apple and chalk, cut through with that bright, zesty acidity. It’s precise, concentrated and quietly powerful, a wine with years of life ahead.

    A great Hunter Valley wine

We buy this every season and are very pleased it is back after the fires in 2020. Very reliable wine.

Hunter Valley Semillon is one of the world's most unique regional wine styles. The Braemore vineyard (planted 1969) is situated on the sandy alluvial flats of Hermitage Road, Pokolbin, and consistently produces Semillon featuring freshness, vibrancy, and remarkable longevity. This single-vineyard wine has achieved an enviable reputation over the years as being one of the finest examples of classic Hunter Valley Semillon.

In the Vineyard
An ideal, relatively dry growing season from budburst through to verasion, had the vineyard looking textbook perfect and ready for the run home to harvest. A couple of pesky storms during January certainly tested our nerve, but ultimately the season was very kind indeed, leading to perfectly ripe fruit with perfectly balanced natural acidity.

A relatively generous crop was a welcome return after the miserable yields from the 2024 vintage.

We started picking the Braemore vineyard on Monday, the 27th of January, and just like last year, it was evident that the whole vineyard was ripening very quickly and evenly so we managed to hand-pick the whole vineyard in just five days.

In the Winery
The hand-picked fruit was run across our state-of-the-art vibrating sorting table to ensure that only the absolute highest quality bunches get through to the press. The grapes are then whole-bunch pressed to minimise phenolics, and fermented with our specially selected neutral yeast to enhance the varietal purity. At the completion of the fermentation, the wine spent six weeks resting on its yeast lees prior to preparing for bottling.

The 2025 Braemore Semillon is back to a more classically shaped style, displaying impeccable purity and precision than the slightly riper style from last vintage. The internal concentration, intensity, and tightly wound energy are always hallmarks of this pedigree vineyard. The 2025 vintage edition is certainly a wine that will provide great current drinking pleasure as well as being an absolute belter for the cellar.

Is it possible this vintage could rival the great 2013 vintage Braemore?

Thomas Wines

Andrew Thomas is a modern-day legend in the Hunter Valley, crafting some of the region's greatest wines for over three decades. His personal label is regarded as a benchmark winery, with a focus on premium Shiraz and Semillon— the Hunter Valley's hero varieties. Thomas has access to some of the region’s best vineyards, allowing him to create wines that truly capture the essence of the Hunter.

Originally from McLaren Vale, Thommo moved to the Hunter Valley to join the winemaking team at Tyrrell's Wines. After 13 years, he ventured out to develop his own label, making single-vineyard wines that highlight the subtle differences between Hunter’s subregions.

Thomas Wines is known for its classic Hunter Valley Shiraz and Semillon, but it also occasionally explores innovative styles without compromising on value. The white wines are delicate and cellar-worthy, while the reds are full-bodied and classic in the best sense of the word, making them one of the benchmarks for modern Hunter Shiraz.

A mentor to much of the next generation of Hunter producers, if you want to try the essence of the Hunter Valley, Thommo's wines are a must-try.
