Description

The El Desperado was born from the infamous 2011 "vintage from hell." Faced with a wet summer winemaker Tom Keelan took a huge risk and sacrificed his full range to create something truly unique under a new El Desperado label. Although unplanned, tasting El Desperado proves it was worth the gamble.

The result is a wonderfully fresh, fruit-forward wine made for any-day-of-the-week enjoyment. On the nose it has fresh-cut pear, rock melon, and citrus blossom while the palate is lovelly smooth mix of Nashi pear, Honeydew melon, and lemon sherbet. Almond overtones, acacia flowers, and a hint of spice enhance its refreshing, soft, and juicy character. Natural acidity ensures a clean, crisp finish.

El Desperado, born from one of the toughest vintages delivers top value from beginning to end.

Our first ever Vintage of El Desperado was 2011, and will always be known in Australian wine history as the vintage from hell, as many vineyards succumb to the wet summer. For the Pawn, we sacrificed making our full range of wines that year to create a brand new style of wine. Although we did not set out to make the El Desperado before that vintage, when you taste this wine, by hell you will be glad we did.
This wine shows aromas of melons and pears with a subtle hint of tropical and citrus fruits. It has an intense aroma of fresh-cut pear and cling-stone peach accented by citrus blossom and soft floral notes. It has aromas of rock melon, citrus blossom and soft floral notes of acacia flower and sea spray.
On the palate the texture is very smooth, with juicy Nashi pear, Honeydew melon and lemon sherbet flavours all entwined with a middle palate viscos-ity that makes it both refreshing, soft and juicy. It is almost silk-like with over-tones of almonds and acacia flowers, citrus and spice and just enough natural acidity to give a clean crisp finish.

Chess Trivia
In chess, El Desperado is a doomed pawn that seems deter-mined to give itself up to bring about a stalemate when captured, a pawn that is as good as dead and so sets out to do as much damage as possible.

Goes best with
It will accompany spicy Asian inspired cuisine, Vietnamese take-away, or just a slab of Sashimi with a sharp knife, a spray of soy sauce and a tube of wasabi.

Cellaring Trivia
This wine is enjoyable young, but with its spicy texture and palate weight, it has the structure to flower into a classic over the next 2 years
