Description

Spinifex's main man, Pete Schell, treats his rosé with just as much seriousness as his top-tier reds, and it really shows in the glass. This has long been one of the benchmarks for the dry, Provence-style in Australia, but it always feels distinctly rooted in the Barossa.

The 2025 is a blend of Mataro and Grenache, with Mataro taking the lead this year at over half the blend. The fruit comes from four different dry-grown spots across the valley - Angaston, Ebenezer, Vine Vale, and Bethany - from vines anywhere between 25 and 90 years old. Pete gives the grapes a few hours on skins to get that perfect pale hue and a bit of silken texture before letting it rest on lees in tank for six months.

It’s got a great energy to it, full of wild strawberry and pink grapefruit notes with a savoury, herbal edge that keeps it from being simple. This is exactly what you want for a long lunch. It’s fresh, bone-dry, but it has the kind of detail and finesse that sets it apart from your average pink wine. Another stellar release from one of the masters of the style.

Spinifex’s provençal-styled rosé is among the best this country offers, and 2025 is another stellar release. This year, the blend comprises Grenache (45%) and Mataro (55%) sourced from four dry-grown sites in Angaston, Ebenezer, Vine Vale and the southern end of the Bethany foothills. Soils vary across the sites from gravelly sand to red clay, and vine age ranges from 25 to 90 years. The (predominantly) bush vines are dry-grown.

Each batch spent two to six hours on skins before being pressed to tank for fermentation. A small portion of the wine went through malolactic conversion, and maturation took place on lees in tank for six months. The resulting wine offers the kind of energy and snappy, crunchy lines that were once the exclusive domain of the finest Provence rosés.

Spinifex Wines

Spinifex are one of the 'New' Barossa's true pioneer producers. Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter's wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.
