Description

Vermentino rarely gets this kind of serious love, but Mauricio Ruiz Cantu and the Somos team have elevated it far beyond your average salty sipper. This is hands down one of the most compelling Australian Vermentinos on the market.

Sourced from Paxton's biodynamic Hiltop vineyard in McLaren Vale, the fruit is treated with the kind of care usually reserved for premium Chardonnay. It was picked early to retain a razor-sharp line of acid, destemmed, and left on skins for 24 hours to extract maximum flavour. From there, it was gently pressed into a mix of old French barriques and puncheons for a wild fermentation. To build real complexity and mouthfeel, the wine spent nine months on lees with occasional bâtonnage, followed by three months in bottle before release.

This '25 release a brilliantly textured "beach wine with brains". It keeps those classic Sardinian sea-spray aromatics but layers in lemon curd, subtle spice, and a gently chalky grip that makes it a delicious food wine.

"This wine has seen an evolution of late, with this the biggest deviation from the prior opulently textural, skinsy, creamy and barrel-influenced iterations... There’s a little chewy detail, and a saline slip to the zippy finish. And it’s a most pleasing thing."

94 points - "A warm vintage and an early pick. This wine has seen an evolution of late, with this the biggest deviation from the prior opulently textural, skinsy, creamy and barrel-influenced iterations. It still saw oak, but no barrel ferment, with older oak maturation for six months, French puncheons only. The result is a more harmonious whole, still with a wash of texture, and some nutty savoury detail, but the fruit clarity is heightened. Waxy red apples, citron, preserved lemon, grapefruit pith. There’s a little chewy detail, and a saline slip to the zippy finish. And it’s a most pleasing thing." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

Retaining all the classic sea-spray aromatics of this Sardinian variety, we picked it early enough to keep a great line of acid, but building on barrel fermentation and ageing on lees to add complexity and enhance the textural nature of the variety. We have created a complex and textured little number that has tons of layers.

WINEMAKING: Fruit was destemmed and stayed on skins for 24 hours to extract flavour, it was then gently pressed into a mix of old French barriques and puncheons, and fermented wild. We let the wine age on lees for 9 months, with occasional bâtonnage to develop texture and mouthfeel . It was kept in bottle for 3 months before release.

Somos

Mexican winemaker Mauricio Ruiz Cantu is creative mind behind this exciting McLaren Vale project, with the wines exported back to South & Central America as well as sold through just a handful of outlets and venues locally in Australia.

His focus is on 'alternative' varieties from sustainably managed vineyards - Mauricio's Aglianicos and Vermentinos being of particular note. The Somos unique wines are made with a deft touch, not fully natural but absolutely in the more lo-fi end of the winemaking pool.

The resulting wine styles are colourful, perfumed, balanced, and bursting with personality. And universally, they offer terrific value for money.

Just minuscule volumes produced, but great fun to be had across the Somos range.
