Description

Steve Pannell has spent years proving that Mediterranean varieties belong in McLaren Vale, and this Fiano is pretty convincing evidence that he’s right. Named 'Fi Fi' as a tribute to his wife Fiona, this wine is all about finding the right grape for the region’s warm, dry summers and coastal breezes - conditions that mirror Fiano’s home in Southern Italy.

It’s a step up in complexity from previous years. You get the expected hit of white nectarine, pink grapefruit and jasmine tea upfront, but give it a bit of air and things get interesting.

It has that classic waxy texture that makes Fiano so good with food, but stays fresh and energetic. It’s a rare beast - a white wine from a warm region that genuinely delivers on freshness and detail. Perfect with crab pasta or anything with a bit of spice.

Finding white varieties suited to the Mediterranean climate has always been one of the greatest challenges and with Fiano that challenge is being met. As one of Italy’s oldest cultivars, Fiano is at home in Campania but can also be found in Basilicata and Sardinia. The proximity to the coast and warm dry summers of these regions bear a striking similarity to McLaren Vale.

Named for Fiona Pannell, known to her friends as Fi Fi and the driving force behind Pannell Enoteca. In Stephen's words, "a wine that gives praise and thanks to the siren song that makes life complete."

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate. They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!
