Description

Stephen Pannell’s obsession with Nebbiolo is legendary, and the Protero vineyard in Gumeracha is where that passion finds its true home in the Adelaide Hills. After surviving the 2019 bushfires, the Pannells doubled down on this site, removing varieties that didn't fit to focus on the ones that do.

The 2025 Rosé is sourced from Block 6, specifically the Nebbiolo 111 clone. The season was the driest in living memory, resulting in a disease-free, early harvest that delivered pristine fruit. Pannell handled it with kid gloves: hand-picked, destemmed and very gently pressed before a long, cool fermentation to lock in the fragrance.

It's not as if he needed another rose in his line-up (three at last count with Koomilya and Arido) but this is pretty, pink and delicate with the structural backbone you expect from this variety. It opens with aromas of blood orange, pomegranate, pickled strawberry and pink rose petals, backed by a hint of alpine meadows and sage. Delicious stuff.

"A powerful, complex, textural and thoroughly satisfying glass of deadly serious rosé. A rosé for food rather than idle quaffing."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

94 points - "Medium-full salmon-pink with a tinge of orange; a rich and engaging bouquet which shows some age development with nuttiness from some barrel involvement as well as density, richness and fleshy texture. There's plenty of phenolics without spoiling the drinkability. A powerful, complex, textural and thoroughly satisfying glass of deadly serious rosé. A rosé for food rather than idle quaffing. (Made from the 111 clone of nebbiolo, grown in the Kenton Valley)." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

93 points - "This is intentionally made, right through to the nebbiolo clone (111) that was grafted onto the Protero vineyard specifically for this rosé. From the ground up. It shows off the variety's inherent rosehip tea, cranberry, red cherry fruit scents and flavours, with an appealing, lighter-weight body and pumice stone–like tannin and minerally dryness. It's savoury, fine-boned, thirst-slaking stuff. A serious take on rosé." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

“I first made a Nebbiolo Rosé in the early 2000’s during my formative time in Piedmonte with G.D.Vajra. Nebbiolo’s aromatics and tone lend itself to Rosé and the flavours are unusually complex.

We grafted an old Chardonnay vineyard on Protero to the rose clone (111) specifically for making rosé.

The result is a wine we love to drink year-round from a single site and a clone of Nebbiolo ideally suited to rosé.” SCP
