Description

Ochota Barrels has always had a soft spot for Gewürztraminer. It sneaks into blends here and there in tiny amounts - a splash in a red ferment, a few skins to lift the aromatics - but this is where it takes centre stage.

Weird Berries in the Woods has never been about textbook Gewürztraminer. The motto has always been: do the opposite of what you’re taught with aromatic whites. Pick some berries ripe, some crunchy, some in between - and let the whole lot tell its own story. Basket press, seasoned French oak, wild ferment, no polish.

The 2025 shows all the quirks we love: lychee and tangelo blossom up front, a thread of lavender and ginger, then a bone-dry, chalky finish that keeps you coming back. Full malo this year has given it extra generosity, softening the edges while keeping that nervy line of acid humming through.

It’s fragrant, textural, a little unpredictable - in other words, everything Gewürz should be in the hands of Ochota.

A floral and focused gewurztraminer showing aromas of lemon oil, yellow apples and rose petals with a mineral drive. The palate is medium-bodied with a textural mouthfeel and fine acidity. Full malolactic due to the hot vintage adds lovely density. Drink now. Screw cap.

pH – 3.36 | T.A. – 5.2 | Alc. – 11.4%
Picked from a single vineyard in the Adelaide Hills, Peramangk Country, 10 days earlier than 2024.
Pressed directly to seasoned French oak with full solids.

Weird berries in the woods, soft fresh lychee, tangelo blossom, lavender, Meyer lemon and manuka honey.
Bone dry with full texture and a crisp finish.
Rose petal infused lemongrass entry followed by chalky, mandarin-skinned texture, forming a foundation for the jasmine and ginger infused nervy acid line which finishes long and bright.
Full malo this year which gives a beautiful generosity and overall softness.

Ochota Barrels

Ochota Barrels are the epitome of rockstar wine labels.

The grungy, minimalist attitude that they have towards their wines has seen them gain huge cult status internationally as one of the most boundary-pushing winemakers in Australia. After the passing of Taras, Amber Ochota is now at the helm at her home in the beautiful Basket Range of the Adelaide Hills. Their wines are crafted in small batches, with fruits sourced from surrounding vineyards in the Hills and special sites across McLaren Vale. Taras' legacy of lighter, more ethereal wines live on, with freshness and 'tension' as a motif.

These are highly sought-after and extremely limited wines which have a pulsating energy and drive to them. Some of the country's most exciting vinous creations, no doubt.
