Description

Michael Downer is doing some of the best work in the Adelaide Hills right now. While his top-tier "Artisan" wines get plenty of limelight, this estate Pinot (and its Chardonnay sibling) is the one we reach for most often. It’s a masterclass in value - giving you all the "pinosity" and detail of a much more expensive bottle for a fraction of the price.

Michael doesn't overcomplicate things here. He uses a mix of fruit from the family's Oakbank estate along with some premium spots in Lenswood and Piccadilly. The winemaking is gentle, using just a bit of whole-bunch fermentation and old French oak to add spice without burying the fruit.

It’s bright, energetic, and incredibly easy to like. It’s got that lovely, crunchy red fruit like cherries and cranberries, but with a savoury, forest-floor edge that makes it feel like proper Pinot. There’s a cool "Negroni" vibe to it as well - a touch of orange oil and dried herbs that keeps the finish interesting.

It’s light on its feet, effortless to drink, and belongs on a lunch table with some charcuterie or a roast chicken. This is exactly what you want in a house Pinot.

94 points - "One-third estate fruit, the rest from growers in the Piccadilly Valley and Lenswood regions. MV6, D5V12, 114 and 115 for the clone nerds; 15% whole bunch and 15% new French oak. There's an elegance to this release. A delicate floral perfume awakens the senses first, followed by crunchy red fruit, cherry, cranberry and pomegranate. There's a wildness to it, too, polish and poise, yes, but not too much. A forest forage, you'd say. Add a dusting of dried herbs and a gentle release of orange oil, not unlike a Negroni, and you have one very smart Hills pinot." - Katrina Butler (Halliday Wine Companion)

Bright ruby red, revealing delicate aromas of fresh red cherries, wild strawberries, raspberries, and subtle earthy undertones with hints of dried herbs and spice. On the palate, juicy red fruit flavors of cherry and cranberry are balanced by a savory edge of forest floor and herbs, with lively acidity adding a crisp, refreshing quality. Fine-grained tannins provide a silky texture, while a touch of oak enhances the wine’s complexity without overpowering the fruit. The finish is long and elegant, leaving lingering notes of red fruit and spice, making it a beautifully balanced wine that pairs well with roasted poultry, duck, or mushroom risotto.

Murdoch Hill

Murdoch Hill is a family-owned winery captained by talented young winemaker Michael Downer.

Downer splits the range in two: his clean-cut, consistently high-quality ‘Estate’ wines are excellent value and perpetually reliable, and his quirky, adventurous ‘Artisan’ wines which offer an alt-styling and different shades of the region.

With the combination of high-quality Adelaide Hills fruit grown on the family estate and the undoubted talent in the winery, this is a Hills producer on the up and up!
