Description

The Breaking Ground Albarino is Ollie Margan’s pet project and a brilliant example of how well this Spanish variety thrives in the Hunter. The vines went into the family’s Ceres Hill vineyard in 2014 on a sandy river flat, and they’ve been farmed organically for the past few years.

Ollie leans right into the grape’s natural brightness, creating a texturally interesting, modern drop that doesn't cost the earth. The 2025 vintage turned out clean fruit with a stack of natural, zesty punch. Ollie fermented the juice using wild yeasts in old French oak puncheons and ceramic eggs, letting it sit on the skins for a short spell. This clever approach coaxes out a beautiful, waxy texture and subtle grip without losing any of the grape's signature line of freshness.

The nose is incredibly aromatic, bursting with white peach, orange blossom, and a distinct briny, sea-spray character. On the palate, it is lively and layered, matching its juicy citrus and stone fruit flavours with a lovely, slippery mouthfeel and a crisp, salty finish.

A fantastic, boundary-pushing white that delivers drinkability, interest and value in equal measures.

"This is the best albarino I have tried in Australia, year on year. There, I said it."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

“This is the best albarino I have tried in Australia, year on year. There, I said it.” - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

91 points - "Aromatic, textural white wine territory, medium weight, squeaky and a bit slick, with a little sip of pleasing bitterness shot through. Tonic water, preserved lemon, Japanese pickled ginger making landfall with dashes of nectarine and peachy fruit too. Good energy to this wine, straightforward but with distinct personality." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Customer Reviews

The Breaking Ground Albarino, compared with the Ceres Hill versions, whilst sourced from the same vineyard, is an exploration of the variety through texture. Half of the pick is fermented in contact with its skins, the other half as we do Chardonnay, in large, seasoned French oak barrels. This might make the wine sound like a whole lot, though it isn’t. This grape can hold texture and aromatic intensity well due to its salinity and high levels of natural acidity.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
